Kerouac, I am curious too about the arches with the metal cans??? coming out don't leave us hanging! Oh, that is just part of the Lille 3000 event. The report is here and here. (In my opinion, the follow up report is even better more interesting than the first one.)

Gorgeous picture -- love the light and shadows and how the arches seem to recede into infinity. Was that taken with a film camera?

Thanks, Bix, that was the effect I was after. The 'tunnels of arches' stretched out north-south, east-west and diagonally like trees in an orchard. This had the best lighting. I took it with my trusty old digital Nikon and have cropped it to get rid of the rubbish on the ground in the foreground. The stables held 1,000 horses, all ready for battle, when Meknes was the royal capital.

For a change of style, here are some arches entirely (as far as I can see) without function other than decoration and visual effect, at the Parc André Citroën in Paris: My blog | My photos | My video clips"too literate to be spam"

That last one looks a bit structurally tenuous. Parisian demolition/renovations often appear a bit crazy to American eyes but I trust they've got a method to it.

Those are the remnants of the Gaumont Alésia cinema, currently undergoing its 4th total makeover in 100 years. I don't know if they will be keeping the arches or not. It was a 7-screen multiplex after the last renovation in the 1990's, and it will be an 8-screen multiplex when it reopens in 2016. However, this is the first time that they have actually torn everything down to totally rebuild.
