So far I have personally witnessed one and heard of 3 definites.
I witnessed a car ice-sliding into the cathedral's railings.
* My cousin has broken her arm on ice * someone up the road fell and cracked his head on ice, rendered unconscious * another cousin wrote his car off on an icy motorway pileup plus injured his spine
how's it going for everyone else?

I fell on ice yesterday. Thankfully, I didn't hurt myself and the eggs I was carrying are still intact!

glad you're ok Annie!(and the eggs too Fortunately, there is not enough ice here to cause these kind of accidents. One of my last trips to ice country, I had just gotten off the plane and slipped in the JFK airport and badly sprained my ankle. One of the worst visits I ever had because of my immobility.

casi, there would be no ice if the council had de-snowed the pavements and footpaths on the one day it snowed. Standard treatment here is to plonk some grit salt onto the most used/worst bits of pavement.

It's still treacherously icy on my street. It took me a couple of days to clear the ice off the pavement outside my house. I sprinkled salt to prevent the ice forming again. There is no salt left on supermarket shelves. Apparently salt is having to be imported into the country due to high demand.
I have urged my neighbours to clear their pavements and one has used builders' sand which is making a hell of a mess.
Perhaps I'd better try and start my car today. I have to walk half a mile to reach where I last parked it.
Annie - you had a lucky escape there!

I learned in the British press this week that when grit is not available, cat litter is the next best thing.
There were a lot of accidents in Paris this morning, because the streets were a sheet of ice. I took enormous precautions in my rental car, because I had to go to the suburbs up a very steep hill, and yes, the wheels started spinning on the ice. Hate that!

People have been stealing grit in Yorkshire (which is very hilly, of course).
Cat litter is not exactly cheap. Of course I have a big bag of road salt in my landing just above those treacherous outdoor stairs. To stay on the wee beastie theme, it is hard on dogs' feet, and that is why some dog owners put booties on their canine friends' paws. I know it looks silly, but...

A very good friend in Hemel crashed on black ice yesterday morning (sat). He tells me they were hitting eachother like dodgem cars on the hill outside his home and he simply got caught up in the melee. Its a fairly steep hill and once a vegicle locks up or skids, it willactually pick up speed until it hits something solid. His car is written off.

I heard today that another woman fell down in my street the other day and broke both her wrists

That happened to one of my great aunts once. Apparently one is not able to do alone a number of necessary things in the WC during the healing process.

I am getting an unfortunate mental image of that thing male dogs do, the activity my son refers to as "butt-surfing".

I have seen some of those news reports about the ice storm in Quebec and eastern Ontario. After all these years, you would really think they would learn to bury power lines so that when trees come crashing down, thousands of people don't lose power.
