-6 here this morning but sunny so should soon improve. We had a scattering of snow yesterday which is still hanging on in shaded places.

Your part of the 'New' World or just the US? Remember that Bixa and I both live in America as do many millions of people farther south. I have friends in Argentina and Chile who are enjoying the Austral summer, less severe there this year than what you are enduring in Oz.

0° but it feels much colder because of the wind. And a big difference with the 33° we had last week. Some snow yesterday but not nearly as much as we were promised.

It was 14° and sunny this afternoon! Now it's clouding over and more rain is forecast but it really began to feel like spring.

just the normal here ... and lots of snow where we are going, so much so that the last bit of road (the part where we were supposed to switch from train to bus) is closed due to the risk of avalanches. which complicates things, apparently i have to take the train to a different place, and then take a taxi (the different place is also further away, so the taxi won't be cheap, and it also just makes me all confused, and everyone in our group has booked a different train, so i can't just follow other people and they will bring me to the right place ... good thing i booked an early train, though really my hope was getting there early so a. could relax and play a bit before bed time ...)

That sounds pretty extreme. In 3 trips to Australia, I think I never saw heavy rain, although I did arrive in Sydney once the day after a devastating hailstorm -- the cars sitting in the sales lots were pretty much destroyed. I do remember it raining when I was up in Kuranda, but that was gentle and pleasant.
In Paris, we are getting rather unpleasant cold rain, just one step from freezing rain.

It is much milder now; pleasant winter weather. I went for a good walk but unfortunately did not walk as fast as I would have liked due to ice patches underfoot. I believe that it is above freezing in Chicago now, which can lead to icing and massive flooding.
Questa, was your friend wounded in the war, or later on? Of course both Trump and Dubya Bush avoided military service. In the US anyway, bellicose types who avoid conscription are known as "chickenhawks".
In reference to the "frugal living" thread, my warm coat has already paid for itself.

Lagatta
He copped head injuries in one attack...still has several bits of shrapnel in his head, too dangerous to remove. then a leg injury and a spell in US hospital with viraemia. The real nasty is that he was working with the Agent Orange chemicals and developed cancer. He has had years of the usual regime of surgery, chemo and radiation but the cancer returned in his lower spine. The only way to remove the tumour would leave him paraplegic but he chose that.
The Govt paid for his house and car to be modified, and he has support from his mates. I am hoping to meet up with him in June.

Thanks for your kind thoughts. ATM his phone is not taking messages I don't quite know how to say this, but the word 'rooting' has a different meaning in Oz. It is not what a loving couple does in a bed of fine linen, either...more like the in back seat of a clapped out car. And don't ask your maiden aunt if her flower cuttings are finally rooted. Edit to add...back to the weather...town of Ingham has just had 500mm of rain in one hour...!

Sleeping in airports was a funny small site which aided the budget travellers back in the '90s. I used it to find the quieter parts of various airports, and what facilities were available.
Had a look at it today...gone serious and has all the info about what's available at each stopover. Doesn't say much about the hiding places and what time the cleaners arrive to throw you out.

That is funny about rooting - used to mean supporting, originally by sport fans. Funny, in French "en rut" refers to randy animals... Good to know to avoid the term ..."why don't we do it in the road" springs to mind. en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/root The very last definition of the word! The online Oxford is very good for the English of different countries. I'm intrigued by the form modified by adjective.

It has been raining here all day, not really heavily, just raining. Not cold -- around 10°. Last night at 6pm it was still light so indeed it felt as though spring is coming. My camellias are beginning to bloom.

At least his first name isn't Randy!
As for weather here, it is still up and down, but the temps haven't been as unusually frigid as a couple of weeks ago. The major peril is freezing rain and fog.
No idyllic winter wonderland, even in the countryside. But not too bad.
