Mich, do you enjoy living in that climate? Not just the cold, but the general climate where you are? I do enjoy the climate, except not fond of about 10 - 12 weeks a year. We have about 8 weeks of pretty bitter cold because we have humidity which makes it feel so much colder, we also have a couple weeks in the early summer where the bugs will drive you into the house and also a couple weeks during the winter thaw can be worrisome. I do not like the cold and am not a winter outdoor person. Spring, summer and fall seasons are gorgeous here and living at the lake brings many joyful experiences. We were talking about this today actually, determined that we would never permanently leave, fortunate to have family and friends we would not want to live without. But also because where we would go? We are pretty centrally located. During winter months we try to make the best of it, go to hockey games (season ticket holders) but otherwise spend our time going to game nights at friend, group dinners and researching for the next holiday! Hoping that in retirement we can spend 8 to 10 weeks (after New Year's until mid March) away somewhere different each year.

The fires are filling everyone's thoughts. Doesn't feel like Xmas. Two volunteers dead and many more have damaged lungs. 2000 on the ground but the fire is too big (The size of Sydney.)Over 100 fires in NSW. The fireys are exhausted. The drought has caused the fires to explode sending embers ahead of the main front for kilometers. Our bastard of a PM is on holidays in Hawaii...oh he has decided today to come back and make a nuisance of himself. At least the Opp. Leader made breakfast for the fireys. There are some spectacular photos on various sites. They are awe-some.

Mich, thanks for the answer. Yes, family and friends often keep you in a place. I've just returned to Europe from Zambia for the Christmas period to see family and friends and one thing I wasn't looking forward to, and now I am in it, I don't like it at all, is the different weather. Compared to you it is not cold, only in single figures celcius, but for me, it is too cold, cloudy and rainy. If your family and friends are not living there anymore, I presume you wouldn't be either? If they were in a warmer climate, would you move?

I just saw an article on the BBC with pictures of people demonstrating against Morrison's vacation in Hawaii. Have neighbouring countries offered help? Or is that a stupid question when your only neighbour who might be able to provide help is New Zealand? This has been going on so long that the firemen won't be able to continue on their own.
Meanwhile, it's still mild here. Yesterday afternoon we went for a walk on the beach. It was 17° although it clouded over while we were there. There was a windstorm during the night but this morning I see that there are still a few leaves hanging on the tree in front of the house.

My state got hit today as record temps and strong north winds combined with dry lightning to start numerous fires around the 'hills'areas. 30 plus homes lost as well as horses and alpacas. NSW sent a water bomber to help...they have so much smoke that the bombers can't see the targets (Are you busy this weekend, Mossie?) about 5pm we got a proper storm with hail and a few ml water. Smoke is still thick. enough to keep my doors and windows closed. There are fires in all states. This has been caused by the widespread drought reducing the earth to a tinderbox.

Very complex, scary and sad Questa, the area affected is so vast. I do not understand how people do no understand the climate change crisis, I guess they choose to not watch or read the reality of what is happening because it does not affect them YET. The extent that your continent has seen is frightening. Our men are fighting a 4 building fire in the downtown right now, 100 year old buildings, it has been challenging since it is -20C, equipment and men are freezing up.

Rain and high waters here in Western Washington State, the past 24 hours have been the wettest in 3 years. Looks to improve by Sunday, and Christmas week looks drier, and maybe even a glimpse of sunshine.

Settling in to accepting below freezing temperatures. The lake has completely frozen over as of yesterday. We have been fortunate to have not had heavy snowfalls, just a little bit every couple of days. The ski hill has opened. We have had our first snowmobile fatality of the season . What ski hill are you near, mich? Our lake froze over HALLOWEEN NIGHT! But the elevation is quite high, 6400’. (1951 meters for most of you...)

Even the French news (on the international channels France 24 and TV5) mentioned heavy rain in Seattle, a city that is not mentioned often.

What ski hill are you near, mich? Kimby we have a small ski hill in the middle of the city called Laurentian Ski Hill and about 40 minutes away in Mattawa we have Mount Antoine which opened today. Quick change in the weather, it has warmed up significantly, -2C currently and calling for freezing rain!

shortest day of the year, but not very dark - sunny and warm in fact, we climbed outside and i was wearing a t-shirt while climbing, a friend was in shorts. while that is fun and nice for us, it is a bit worrisome - this is not normal here. also, most years we had at least some snow by late november/early december, while this year we didn't have any yet ... and the area where we wanted to go skiing over new years apparently recently had 12°C ...

I read yesterday that people in Moscow were also surprised that there was no snow in their city, temperatures are 10° above average.
Here we are still getting a terrible windstorm. It seems to have calmed down a bit from during the night when the sound of the wind woke me up around 2. Because of recent heay rain and winds, most vulnerable trees have already come down, but given that we had 140 kph winds during the night, I guess a few more will fall over/become uprooted. Not cold though -- 13° this morning.

Too warm! What little snow we have is melting, and instead of "rock skis" we may need "mud skis!"
