Well, I will at least say that the water table has been replenished in every single region in France. So there will be no drought complaints for many months.

No complain from Belgium either. My garden is turning into a swamp.

Very cold here today...more rain...
I took the dog to the local park, a slightly longer walk than our usual mid morning ramble...the ground at the park is saturated with lots of standing water. This is England tho...theres a reasonably good chance that we will get a hosepipe ban in we get even a sniff of a heatwave this summer!

Mild here today and we haven't had any rain for over a week. Anywhere that was boggy has finally dried up. The forecast for tomorrow is sunny and 18°. I had to prune my rosebushes yesterday because they have already started growing, even though there are still some of last year's roses on them. It is supposed to cool off again though.

Parts of drought areas had some useful rain for a couple of days. Temps in low twenties for a week. In mid January ??

Bjd, do you prune the roses of that out-of-season growth because it will get nipped in the next freeze?
Sounds like y'all are catching a break, Questa. What is the weather supposed to be like this time of year?

Just after 11:00 p.m. and we are getting rain/freezing rain. The temperature was around 1C all day. What a difference from last year!
Also, there is a gigantic moth that has been swooping around me all evening, not sure where it came from? Did it hatch here in the house or did it get in come in when I had the door open earlier today? Either way, I am currently watching it perched on the corner of a picture frame on the fireplace mantle. I think it is having a nap. I have the urge to try to scoop it up but I can imagine all my picture frames crashing to the ground. Sleeping with the bedroom door closed tonight.

Yeek, Mich!
There is a type of very large dark moth here that appears at certain times. It's completely harmless, but when you enter a dark room and put your hand on the light switch where the thing is resting and it suddenly takes flight like a bat, it's enough to make your heart freeze.

Bjd, do you prune the roses of that out-of-season growth because it will get nipped in the next freeze? No, I always prune them rather early, despite my neighbours in Toulouse telling me to wait until March. But "early" used to be February, not mid-January. It never freezes enough here to damage roses which are pretty hardy. I saw a Japanese quince in full bloom on Tuesday, as well as some irises. Clear skies and 4° here this morning.

Sounds like y'all are catching a break, Questa. What is the weather supposed to be like this ti January is usually hot...36+ but the kids go back to school at end of Jan and then Feb really heats up. That is when the heat waves hit. ATM there is rain in parts of the drought regions and I have been able to step outside and deal with my sunburnt plants. Kangaroo Island had a huge flare up last weekend. Today the police arrested a fellow lighting several fires along the edge of the road.Fortunately they didn't spread and the locals were unable to get to him in the police car.

The rain turned to snow overnight and the temperature is now down to -8C, that is still warm for this time of year. Overall this winter, in my city, has been fairly easy so far, while parts of Newfoundland are expecting 70 cm. of snow today and Vancouver also got snow which is unusual for them.
(No sign of the moth this morning. I left a light on overnight hoping it would be attracted to that!)

Today the police arrested a fellow lighting several fires along the edge of the road.Fortunately they didn't spread and the locals were unable to get to him in the police car. What a jackass! And I can well imagine he needed protection, the stupid bastard. I wonder if he "hit his head" being helped into the police car. No sign of the moth this morning. They don't live very long, Mich, so maybe he's out of your hair for good.

Although it feels like winter in Paris, it doesn't feel like "real" winter since after all daytime temperatures get up to about 10°. There have not yet been any predictions that we might see snow this year.
But there is at least another month of possible variations in store.

It will be a day filled with snow squalls with accumulations of up to possibly 20 cm. Temperature is about -13C. Parts of Newfoundland are reporting over 70 cm. this morning! I have seen some pictures of families digging out from their front doors to their driveways trying to uncover their vehicles. It will take them days to remove the snow from the roads and parking lots.
(Finally found the moths, yes there were actually two of them!)

That sounds wonderful Bixa!
We indeed received about 20 cm of snow, 3 hours of shovelling. It is a beautiful day, sunny and about -10C. Many snowmobiles crossing the lake today.
Vancouver has had quite of lot of snow this winter Mick, unusual for them. I imagine they are relieved to see it melting away!

The French weather reports have gone totally weird. Since the giant winter storm "Gloria" has been coming up in the Mediterranean from Spain and is supposed to hit France tonight, they have been using the Umberto Tozzi song as a sort of theme song as though it will be a wonderful event.

Sharpest frost of the winter here, about -3C, but now a beautiful sunny day, which is better than rain or worse still, snow.
