I have two bargain finds today, but am putting one of them in the British Food thread, so hie thee hence if you wish to see it. Here is another book which would be nice to have on hand, especially for those reluctant to plunk down forty bucks for the print version. Well-written books which cover subjects in which we don't have a particular interest but which nevertheless open our eyes to the unconsidered are treasures. This appears to be that kind of a treasure ~ www.amazon.com/dp/B003DX0I0S/ref=dp-kindle-redirect

As some of you may know, I loved my visit to Naples & want to return. Today I found two ebook deals which will allow me to learn and dream about Naples until I get to return. Here is one I pounced upon, as I think it would make a great companion for a trip to southern Italy. The reviews all say that it's a great overview and history of Naples along with a survey of the food. htmb , take note, please. www.amazon.com/dp/B00E3D10YK/ref=dp-kindle-redirect At first I passed over this book, as I just could not read My Brilliant Friend. But since I wanted to include the deal here, I gave it another look & decided that yes, I should give it a chance. What convinced me (besides its brevity) were the reviews saying how the book gives such a wonderful sense of Naples ~ www.amazon.com/dp/B079MHDVM9/ref=dp-kindle-redirect

Thanks for the tips, Bixa. It was hard to pass up those deals, so I purchased both books.

Ho anche comprato entrambi! One of them wound up being free. That's because the last time I ordered something from Amazon I was given the choice between Prime 2-day shipping or "Amazon Day". The two dates were the same and besides, Amazon pretty much sends things as it pleases in my experience. Anyway, I chose Amazon Day and was quite pleased to get an email telling me I had a $2 credit because of that choice. When I purchased the book this morning, the credit was automatically applied. Good to know, huh?

I thought you had given up on Elena Ferrante, Bixa, -- cheap or not. I did get through her "Friend" books but won't read anything else. Even her short-lived columns in the Guardian didn't last long. She was probably given the heave-ho.

That is true, Bjd. But I also gave up on Hilary Mantel, then wound up devouring Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. Not that I'm saying Elena Ferrante is in Mantel's league, which I doubt, but I thought I'd try again one last time. I did not buy today's offering, but since Ferrante has been discussed a great deal on this forum, I thought it would be fair to give people a chance at it.

How do you say "lab rat" in Italian?

Topo da laboratorio? (though I’m not sure that’s used for the femimine)

I was originally going to ask what "guinea pig" was in Italian, until I remember the slang, very un-pc word my New England relatives and Yankee husband used for Italians.

My eyes glazed right over this title, but I gave it a second look and decided to buy it. My decision was based partly on the "look inside" peek I took, and partly because the author seems like one to watch. It's apparently of favorite of Bill Clinton, if that's the sort of thing that matters to you. www.amazon.com/dp/B008ON449S/ref=dp-kindle-redirect

Thanks for the tip, Huckle. I’ll give Neapolitan Chronicles a try. As for Ferrante, the last book I read, Troubling Love, I believe, almost did me in.

If anyone is interested in this book, be sure to snap it up now, since it's been on discount for more than the usual 24 hours. I posted this on a Oaxaca fb group, and the author graciously replied, linking to the book's website and also saying that this kind of promotion will not affect the royalties. Good to know! For me, a physical cookbook is infinitely preferable to an e-edition. However, because certain cookbooks are also quite readable, they're worth having digitally as well, especially at this price. You can always get the hard copy, too. This book is also available for $1.99 as a Barnes & Noble nookbook. Some of you who might be tempted may not be in the US. Here is something I copied which could help you access the bargains posted on this thread: ... there is a problem ... if you are not an American Amazon customer. The deals are for each Amazon site. If you are with amazon.fr, like me ... that does not prevent you from buying ones from another country. A lot of the time, the English books discounted on amazon.com are also discounted for me if I buy from amazon.fr. You have to change the website and search again. Sometimes, they may not be available in your country. source (<-- go to source for a link to Kindle bargains on Amazon.fr) www.amazon.com/dp/B084MNJ7BK/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

The conversation on the Agatha Christie thread veered off onto other classic mystery series. And look, here is a bargain on one of the Peter Wimsey books. I say a bargain, but look below the main offer on the link and you'll see that quite a few of the fifteen books in that series also have special attractive prices ~ www.amazon.com/dp/B008JVJHRY/ref=dp-kindle-redirect I see this book was featured here back in February at reply #112. It's back on special & I'm featuring it again, as both my mother and I read it avidly ~ www.amazon.com/dp/B079WMZHKD

It's been over a month since I found any bargains worthy of featuring here, so here are three to make up for that ~ I'm not sure who besides whatagain is interested in this kind of book, but it's a beautiful presentation: Any historical fiction fans around? Philippa Gregory is one of the queens of that genre, although every one of her many novels is not a winner. This one got mixed reviews, but for the price I am definitely giving it a chance: Has any woman here not read The Handmaid's Tale? I read it so long ago that I'm going to have to go back (after the tv series finally winds up) and re-read it before embarking on the sequel. Here it is, the 2019 Booker Prize winner, at a fantastic price:

It is fabulous to see this fabulous book available for this fabulous price right now! I became an immediate fan of Paulette Giles when I read her novel, "Enemy Women". In a lucky bit of serendipity, when I acquired this book, "News of the World", I had just taken a driving trip with my sister through the very territory covered in the book. After avidly reading and enjoying it, I got it for my sister who devoured it and sent it on to my mother, who was also blown away by it. But please don't think of her as a "women's writer", as her books appeal to any reader of real literature. Jiles writes beautifully, but the plot in this book is also guaranteed to carry you along. Please check out the link below and prepare yourself for a most satisfying reading experience.

Even though I'm iffy about digital cookbooks, this one seems like a nice addition to a cookbook collection for its historical and cultural notes. For those of you who missed out on previous deals featured here, I see that News of the World now costs $6.99 -- still a good price for such a wonderful read. And The Testaments is still available for $2.99.

I see that News of the World now costs $6.99 I really like the sound of this so looked it up... in the UK via Amazon, it is £ 6.99 for the e book ... but if I do the audio book trial I can get it on audio for free - now I am really tempted . I have been considering audio books for a while but have never taken the plunge. Anyone else used this medium - how di d you find it ? Or is this a whole different thread ?

I hope someone else responds, Lugg. As far as I can tell, there is no separate thread about them.I don't like being read to, so have never taken advantage of the free come-on audio book. I do think it's very nifty that you can listen to audio samples of books before buying.
