Dammit, how did you get a beautiful blue sky today while it was pouring rain in Paris? And it's probably best not to say "spring" too quickly.

nah...I was at work anyway. OH saw the car as he fought his way through town on his way to a hospital appointment. Liz & Phil have been to Leicester a few times....dunno about Mrs-queen-in-waiting. According to the local rag it was a terrific success.

Leicester looks like a very charming place. I, too, have a thing for turrets. I also love the big crenellated towers of the prison, the ornate doors on the old bank, and all the pretty brick buildings.
Great photos!

Duh ~~ never came back to comment on these wonderful photos. Sorry!
The Jain center is mind boggling in every way -- the location, the ornamentation that looks original to the building, regardless of the fact that it was grafted on later, the little bit of gothic detail, and the photos themselves. I have to ask though, what is signified by the alarming circular hole where genitalia should be on the middle figure of the third Jain center picture?
Gorgeous shadows in the last pic of that series, but my heart belongs to the jagged branches & soaring uprights of the office building photo.

Great pictures! I have family in Leicester and have been a few times over the last few years. I always thought the city was an interesting mix of history and modern-day scrappy. Your photos have brought back some fun memories!

Only saw the new additions today. At the first picture on reply 73, I had to stop and blink as for a millisecond I thought you'd been to Exeter. I will also join the party at the veggie restaurant.

I only just saw your reples...cheers medears....
Bixa dear....I hadn't noticed the hole...maybe it has some significance..but I haven't a clue what it would be. The carvings are very stylised and incredibly interesting. OH has been inside the temple and says it's even more stunning inside....what I wouldn't give to have a look!

Restful bucolic images if it were not for the squirrels. Squirrels are not restful creatures.

What a wonderful park full of wildlife! Thanks for showing it to us Cheery. That's the closest pic to baby swans I think I have ever seen. Maybe Mickthecactus showed us a swan on the nest, but will have to go back to see if their were babies.

Lots of traffic in Church Langton!
I love how prominent the telephone box is in one of the other Langtons. It was so important in the old days to be able to locate one. Now it is just a joy to see that there are still a few left in spite of mobile phones.

Melton Mowbray rings a bell. Is there anything special about the place? Did something important happen there or was it in a book or film?

Just found this entertaining thread. Melton Mowbray pork pies is what first springs to mind. But it was Bradgate Park which caught my eye. Many years ago when I had to work for my sins, I remember dealing with Bradgate Quarries, later swept up into Redland Roadstones maw, and now the French conglomerate, LaFarge. Is the park from the original quarry masters house?

A lovely insight into this part of the world Cheery! I too immediately thought of pork pies when hearing or reading the name Melton Mowbray. Thanks for that interesting titbit about Bradgate and the quarry Mossie - LaFarge is big in South Africa too. Poured the concrete for my son's house.

Thanks chaps...yes Melton Mowbray are famous for their Pork Pies. I'm not a fan altho OH loves them... Mossie...there is a disused quarry in Swithland Woods to the North East end of the Park. There's been a deep water site there for many years now and it's used as a diving centre www.bradgatepark.org/71/Sub_Aqua_Diving_-_Swithland_Wood_Quarry/There are 3 quaries (domenstic waste landfill) between Newtown Linford and Groby village. They were run by Bradgate Quarries, but are not in the park. There would be a public outcry if the council tried to encroach on the deerpark

Hey ~~ I'm only now seeing the pictures from July! Where was my head? Don't answer that!
The parks are so beautiful, vast, and wild. It's super that at least one of them is so close to town. Also wonderful that, as you just pointed out, that they're cherished by the populace. The squirrel! The standing duck in the reflecting water! The rolling land and greenery -- just gorgeous.
That is a poignant detail about the topping of the oaks.
Gad, the college gardens are wonderful. I do love English style, incorporating some formal areas with artfully groomed parts that look so natural.
Nice drive you show there and lovely towns. I'm intrigued by the langton/long town names as my last name is supposed derived from long down.
little quibble: Lady Jane Grey was executed by Queen Mary I, not by Elizabeth I.
