As horrible as that story is, it reads like a scene in a comedy.

My sister is excited for her appointment in a couple of weeks that she has been waiting so long for. It has taken 2 1/2 years to get an appointment with the only surgeon in the region that does a specific toe joint surgery that she needs, the receptionist told her it could still take another year before she gets the actual surgery though. Hope the appointment that your sis has booked goes well.

Casi - he gave you the same needle as I had. It's quite big and reminded me of the size needles my father used to inject the cows with for Mastitis and other ailments. Actually I have a similar size needle and syringe in my kitchen drawer.....used to inject the meat with flavourings before roasting.
How is the knee feeling today?

First out patient appointment at 12 weeks - was expecting an X Ray and discussion with surgeon. Nope -- had a ( very thorough) assessment by physio. So up shot is - all going well , need to increase my leg muscle strength again and have more confidence. Next appointment at 9 months when xrays etc will be done and will see surgeon. Anyway the physio was great , he really listened to my worries , checked my knee out and re-assured me all was good ...now I feel I just have to crack on and get back to normal life . Plus is I can go swimming again. So will visit local pool etc ...but I think some warm Indian ocean swimming may be just the tonic I need .

If the next appointment is 9 months from now, that seems like pretty good news.

That sounds like terrific news Lugg! Look forward to hearing where you end up finding that warm water!
My mom did really well with her physical therapy for her hip replacement as well. On the second visit (at week 6) his assessment was to continue the exercises for 8 weeks but she did not need to return to the clinic. The following week she had an appointment with her surgeon at the orthopedic clinic, they did X-ray's and told her she is doing fabulously and does not need to return for a year. Now she is eager for spring so she can get back to her gardens.

Excellent news, Lugg! I can only imagine how anxious a person must feel after that kind of surgery. It's great that you have a therapist able to give solid reassurance that you are mended and the rest is up to you. And yes, you deserve the Indian Ocean reward for what you've been through!

Hope the appointment that your sis has booked goes well. My sister had her appointment and it went very well. The surgeon is trying to schedule her for April and is planning on fixing her big toe (the original problem) and also fix her ankle, remove the hardware that was put in when she broke it last winter. He is very hopeful she will be back to her normal self soon thereafter. Lugg, so happy you are on your way back to normal activities! Keep up with those exercises, the final stage to healing. We credit my mom's recovery to her dedication to them.

Struggling today with arthritis in both knees and a foot. Taken anti inflammatories which should sort it out. I really think this is down to the constant wet weather we have had.
Managed to do some work in the greenhouse but eventually too uncomfortable.

Fell while drying myself after the shoer this morning. Took a long time to get back on my feet. Have very painful lower ribs on the left. Hope good night's sleep will cure it. As I say to everyone "Don't get old"

Good piece of advice Mossie.
My neighbour fell a few times in the stairs and broke several ribs.
We suspect, er, are pretty sure, he was plastered but still he took forever to recover.
Pay attention Mossie and get examined if a good night sleep didn't help.

The last time I hit my knee falling on the metro stairs with their reinforced steel borders it took months to get back to normal. But I didn't visit the doctor, which was almost certainly a mistake.

Do you have some kind of system to call for help, Mossie? I believe falls are a big problem as we age and it becomes more difficult to get up.

You are right, Whatagain. Exercise, or at least moving the joints, is the best thing to do if you have knee pain. Or any other pain, in fact. I remember my mother sitting all day and complaining that her back hurt. When I told her to get up and go for a little walk, she would say, "But you don't realize. My back hurts." It's a self-fulfilling thing -- the less you move, the more you hurt.

Within limits, of course. By far, the best thing I ever did for my tortured knees was to stop playing tennis completely. I went from constant and sometimes can't get up the steps pain to rarely thinking about my knees at all within a couple of months. Of course, I don't know how to play tennis any other way than flat-out aggressive.

This should be emblazoned on t-shirts and billboards! Of course there can be other causes of pain, but more likely than not, many of our poor-me-I'm-getting-older pains are nothing more than the result of too much time sitting.

Agree 100%. But then as I did a lot of sport into my ‘50’s I’m used to it.

When I think of how many people just watch everything on video instead of making the effort to go out to a real spectacle, who order food to be delivered, who chat with friends online rather than going to see them, I'm sorry, I don't have any pity for their mobility probems.
