Who else feels as though giant stakes are being driven through that romantic picture of our youth we carry around in our heads?

I would assume that would be most of us who are "baby boomers."

Who else feels as though giant stakes are being driven through that romantic picture of our youth we carry around in our heads? I most certainly do. The news of Kantner I heard just before going to sleep last night, When I awoke this morning I heard it again accompanied by some sound clips which really hit me heard, way beyond nostalgia but, as you say Bixa, a "giant stake being driven..."

Another member of Jefferson Airplane, Signe Anderson, (vocalist and original member who left the band after it's first record, to be replaced by Grace Slick) died this weekend. Curiously, age 74, the same age as Paul Kantner who died last week.

The columns of that building are crumbling about our ears!

Maurice White was 74 too!
Bixa's comment #360 is so apposite. And how can anybody in Jefferson Airplane be 74 anyway?

(I'm almost as fearful of opening this thread as the Aging Parents thread, we're losing so many oldies-but-goodies...)

Dan Hicks of Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks left us at yes, age 74. San Francisco generation of 1960's -70's sound. I really liked his music, in particular, " I Scare Myself".

One of my faves, too. "How can I miss you if you won't go away."

One of my faves, too. "How can I miss you if you won't go away." Yes, that has always been a classic line. What I really liked about him was how he combined country-jazz-rock and really did lay down a precedent for many other musicians of that same era, a la Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead et al. I have a distinct memory of a girlfriend of mine and I being down on Decauter Street, a bit buzzed and we took to the sidewalk and used the old parking meters as microphones and would launch into a repertoire of songs, "I Scare Myself" being one of them along with some songs from Cabaret, Oliver, and of course some Motown hits. Tourists were tossing money at us. Jeez, those were the days...

"How can I miss you if you won't go away." This has been my anthem lately, having a retired husband...

Let's just dispose of all of the people of age 74 and be done with it.

Yes, Bixa, tasteless but funny.
And I have that same smile on my face most mornings when I read the obituaries.

RIP George Martin, Beatles musical producer. Aged 90. At least he wasn't 74.
It's arguable that without him the Beatles would not have been what they became.

Ha ~ but you had to be in a different time zone to achieve that early bird status.
Edited because I just saw your remark about having been born in the same place as George Martin. Both of you deserve plaques on the walls of the natal place.
Martin's entire life was interesting!

A true genius in every way. His business acumen combined with his musical ingenuity, and again, genius, made him truly "the brains of the outfit". Age 90, a life well lived. Of the documentaries etc. that I have seen over many years he exhibited a wonderful sense of humor, dignity, humility and yes, a very interesting and intriguing life. RIP Sir Martin and thank you.
("Layabed",,I'll have to remember that one. You Brits come up with some really good ones.)

Are you both implying that Mick is not worthy of a plaque as well? At least a memorial cactus?
