When you see how awful she looked in recent years from drug use, the cause of death is not much of a mystery.

What is it with singers/musicians and drugs?

I was very sad when I watched the news programs last evening. It is inappropriate to assume drugs or alcohol as the cause of death without verification, but I can not help feeling that this is what will be determined. I despise drugs...
I have so many happy fun memories singing and dancing to her albums in my bedroom with my girlfriends before heading out to the bar for more dancing as the DJ's loved playing her music, the few drinks we would have would be sweated out dancing and dancing...
They report that drug use becomes necessary to keep up with the schedule they keep in making albums and touring, really, is it worth it. I guess it must be, it keeps happening, no one is learning any lessons from Michael, Amy, Elvis and so many more.

Here is a moment of anthology that I'm sure that Whitney Houston (having a bad hair day) never forgot after she appeared live on French television with Serge Gainsbourg.
The magic moment appears at 1:00 on the counter.

Can I just say that as sorry as I am that a talented person has died, I actually didn't like her voice.

Oh my goodness Kerouac... The whole interview was, because I can think of no other word, icky!

Mich, "icky" is an awfully polite word for Gainsbourg. The guy was a creep.
I don't understand these over the top reactions to the death of a pop singer -- Houston or Michael Jackson or any other.

Actually, I do understand the reactions. I think that all of us have a few special stars, authors, personalities, etc., whose demise will affect us considerably. Probably some of us cannot even spontaneously name them until the day we will be shocked by their death, which will make us realize how important they were to us.
However, it is also true that too many people will make over-the-top reactions to ANY of the 200 or so top stars of their particular cultural circle or country, just because it has become pleasurable to share the collective grief with other sobbing top stars and fans. So many emotions have become completely artificial -- need I remind anyone of recent events in North Korea? Our countries do not take it to that level, but we are still taught by the media about what is sad, shocking or despicable, and we are strongly encouraged to conform to the emotions conveniently set down for us.
Nevertheless, even after making such cynical statements, I am totally certain that many tears will flow during the Grammy awards tonight, and if I were among the spectators, I would almost certainly be caught up in it as well.

That is funny bjd, actually yes, I was trying very hard to be polite because I could not put into print what I was really feeling, creep was one of the words though.
I completely agree with your statements Kerouac and I also can understand how being in the theater tonight will be emotional to her peers, knowing that realistically half of them are addicted to drugs or alcohol themselves. So some of the tears might be them thinking that this could have been them, I hope it scares them a lot...

You know what first came to my mind? Her poor (now adolescent if I am not mistaken) children! It's not like their father is going to look after them properly. And her poor mother. She is still alive. She would have wished to have gone instead of her daughter, I guess. So I thought this poor woman is a mother and a daughter first. A well-known artist second.

I think I saw in the paper this morning that Whitney's daughter is 19 years old and already has drug problems according to the tabloids.

I was in Australia early '70's and the Duke Ellington Band were staying at the same hotel. 2 in the morning and we just got in and they were all waiting for transport to go on to the next gig. They openly admitted that it was the only way they could keep going. Duke Ellington was a strange little man....

At the same time, we must not forget that this happens 20,000+ times a day without strangers caring.
|
|
|
Post by mich64 on Feb 13, 2012 19:37:02 GMT
And with all of those 20,000 each day, sadness and grief is felt by all who knew them, but with these people, I guess it is just that we feel we do know them, even if we have never been formally introduced. Realistically, we take more interest in them because the media gives us details of their lives.

Yes, Mich, and like it was mentioned earlier, recording artists give us songs that we enjoy for years and associate memories with, so it is natural to mourn their passing. I loved Whitney Houston when I was a child/teen and was really hoping she would pull herself together and live a happy, productive life.

That's the sort of death that upsets me, just because it is my own generation starting to die, even if they do so prematurely.

And of course Davy Jones is the reason that David Bowie is called David Bowie. Davy Jones was already a star when David Bowie began his career, so he had to ditch his real name, which is David Jones.

today, Lucio Dalla left us. I am not sure of the circumstances and haven't found anything yet.
He was most known outside of Italy for this I think - he composed it:
I got to know him through this:

Just listened to the last video, Annie -- thanks for that! I'm almost positive someone posted another singer's cover of "Caruso" here somewhere. Wikipedia has updated its entry on Dalla: Dalla died in the morning of 1 March 2012, three days before his 69th birthday, right after having had breakfast His death was due to a heart attack. He was in Montreux (Switzerland) for his new tournée. He performed as scheduled, the night before he died..
