FMT, I would enjoy meeting and I am sure you could provide tips, information and stories that would be very helpful to my husband and I. We are spending the first 2 days in Paris, the 3rd leaving on the TGV for Annecy via Lyon. Still investigating how that all works. I think I understand the website in which the route is TGV to Lyon and then regular rail to Annecy via Aix-Les-Bains. This is where we will rent a car and pick up from Hertz at the train station (not until the 2nd day in Annecy, first day to rest and enjoy) to be used for trips to Grenoble, Chamonix and many many small towns in between. We also hope to make it to Torino for an afternoon. We like to visit Olympic sites where we can. Back to Paris after 5 nights in Annecy and then 3 more days in Paris!!!! I have flight, hotels and car rentals all investigated and ready to book. Will be looking for a road map of Southern France as I only have one for the north, and we are ready to go. This will be our 7th trip to Europe. and 4th to France. Looking forward to any advice you can provide and hoping to meet you in September! Cheers, Mich

mich, I would love to meet up with you in Paris. I saw you mentioned you were getting maps so don't forget to heed the tips kerouac and I just mentioned in regards to the Michelin maps. Remember, get the ones with the 1:200,000 scale. I haven't been to any of the areas you'll be visiting outside of Paris so I'm afraid I don't have any tips there. Of course, except for the "get lost" tips I just gave thill25. Remember, Michelin maps, Michelin maps, Michelin maps. See you in September.

You don't need to buy your maps ahead of time -- they are so much easier to find in Paris (and almost certainly cheaper). Since Michelin has not paid my commission this month, I will mention that IGN maps are also excellent, and even superior when you really want lots of detail.
(IGN = Institut Géographique National)

I actually prefer the Michelin maps to the IGN ones. The IGN are better for hiking perhaps because they show relief, but for road maps, Michelin have my preference.
Have you ever seen or used those old military maps? They have everything on them. Once again, useful for small areas, not for driving.

I can see how planning on a map the night before could be fun because we do the exact same thing with our guide books. There is no doubt that planning goes much better when accompanied by an adult beverage or two. ;D

I really loved the golden sunshiny pictures... and the night ones... I note that your research must take much much longer than the actual visit. thanks for sharing!

auntieannie - So true about the research and the writing and the uploading and transferring and resizing of pictures. But it's all worth it to receive your wonderful compliments!

Absolutely LOVED this post! My husband & I are heading to Burgundy for 5 days, leaving this weekend and I can't wait. We rented a house in Semur (bringing our 2 big dogs) for the whole time. I'm frantically trying to come up with some ideas of things to see/do & your post helped so much. Reminding myself to just slow down and enjoy the trip. Where can you get the Michelin maps? Any gas station? Add that to my To Do list for tomorrow. Thanks so much!

Hi Deb - You will find the maps at any full service gas station on the autoroutes and in villages any bookstore or magazine store will have them. They'll also be in the larger supermarkets. Get the ones of the scale 1:200,000 or 1:150,000. If you come back to this thread and leave a message I'll be happy to give you some ideas of things to do in that area and I'll also give you my tips about how to read the Michelin maps to find interesting and scenic drives and quaint villages to visit without even needing a guidebook.
