I don't think of myself as a person who is easily shocked, but the first time I became aware of Rickman was when watching "Close My Eyes" about a sister and brother who were having an affair. After that, whenever I had a chance to watch him perform, I did, just to replace that first impression.
Also, I dislike using the war analogies when a person dies of cancer. I think many people eventually find a way to accept it and die more peacefully, and not embattled.

Exactly, Cynthia. You might enjoy the title of an article in The Guardian today about Rickman: "Look Back in Languor".

Wow! Who of us in that general age group doesn't think of her as a kid, even though she had many grownup roles?

The Israeli-French actress Ronit Elkabetz died yesterday at age 51. She was one of the top film stars in Israel in the 1990's, but she emigrated to France in 1997 even though she didn't speak a word of French. She continued to make Israeli movies at that time while she was washing dishes as a 'trainee' at Ariane Mnouchkine's theatre. In this century she made both Israeli and French movies with probably her greatest performance in Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem which she co-directed. It is still slowly undermining the disgraceful Israeli divorce laws.

Goodbye, Anton Yelchin.
I saw him in quite a few movies and not just the Star Trek reboot crap where he played Chekov. The last movie I saw him in was Green Room.
What a stupid way to die at age 27 -- his car rolled back on him and crushed him against the wall of his house. Looks like he is eligible for Club 27 with all of those other people.

The remarkable Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami has died of cancer in Paris at age 76. He won the Palme d'Or in Cannes in 1997 for The Taste of Cherry. He was considered to be the father of modern Iranian cinema which juggled successfully with censorship by making strong statements without breaking the rules of the censors in the country. In his final years, he also made films in Italy and Japan.

Kenny Baker died. Here's how we almost always saw him. r2dc.com/files/r2d2.pngUnlike most actors, he will probably be easy to replace.

Hollywood director Curtis Hanson died Tuesday, 9/20 His movie L.A. Confidential was one of the best movies of that genre that I can think of save perhaps Polanski's Chinatown.

Lots of tributes here in UK today to Andrew Sachs , whilst his career and skills were much more, I guess he will always be remembered most as Manuel in Fawlty Towers .

Lugg, I have to admit that I saw the news about the death of Andrew Sachs and my first thought was "Fawlty Towers? Big deal." And yet I have watched Fawlty Towers and know the importance of it to British culture. It would be the same if somebody from the "Carry On" movies died and the rest of the world remained indifferent. (Probably a lot of them have died over the years anyway.) Each of our countries has major cultural icons, and even if other people don't understand, they are important to our own cultures and deserve respect.

You thought "Fawlty Towers? Big deal."? Ooo, not I nor probably the zillions of Americans who were treated to Fawlty Towers when it was first imported to the US in the 70s(?) and who remained faithful through endless reruns. To this day I still remember that Manuel was from Barcelona even though I've forgotten all kinds of other information crucial to my life.

You are so right K2. I was not sure if Fawlty Towers was seen outside of the UK -glad to read that it was Bixa. I've watched a few episodes recently - it still makes me laugh.

I saw this last night and had a pleasant, funny memory of my mother. Generally, she was a very reserved, "proper" lady but, after a couple of cocktails and some gentle prodding she would do a "spot on" Zsa Zsa impersonation. I had not thought of this in many years but upon seeing this the memory of it came back clear as a bell.

Zsa Zsa: "I'm an excellent housekeeper, dahlink. Every man I leave, I keep his house." She was married 9 times. That's a lot of real estate!

I will surely seek her out in my future movie gazings.
