I have it on good authority that Kerouac is hoping that all the Brits on the board will come stay with him for the grand opening. After all, only You People will know whether it's done right or not.

I thought it was interesting today -- the day of the official announcement -- that M&S had already covered the former Esprit store on the Champs Elysées with its logo. There was nothing there yesterday.
Actually, the French are a lot more interested by the implantation of M&S superettes all over Paris (not an April Fool's joke!). As strange as it may seem, the food section of Marks & Spencer has always been the most popular part of the store to the French.

They do seem to have a reputation for their sandwiches and underwear. Do the French have any thoughts on those?

Most of the French don't eat underwear, except those specific products available in specialized boutiques.

Hm. Does that explain why your breath smelled frilly when I met you, Mark?

I don't tend to partake myself unless they come in fish and chip flavour.

There used to be a big Marks and Spencer on Blvd Haussman, just opposite Galleries Lafayette and Printemps. Interesting that they have moved to the Champs Elysées. I guess they have enough to pay higher rent now.

What is there to do in Paris?
Is it safe?

Probably not. All snails and gitanes and onion sellers in berets.

They all speak English. They're just pretending not to. I've found that people who don't parlezvous/sprechen/habla English, quickly discover that they do, once I attempt to butcher their language and they realize how much better our transaction will go in English.

I remember the M&S farther east, on rue de Rivoli. It had lovely public toilets, and indeed, the food department was always packed. M&S here in Montréal had very good food. Will Les Champs be the only branch? I'd like to point out here that HEMA, the Dutch general goods chain also found in Belgium and parts of Germany, now has a Paris shop, and at least one other in the Paris region. They may have some others in northern France (the French Flemish area Kerouac photographed a while back). www.hema.fr

Marks and Spencer had several stores in the Paris region but boulevard Haussmann and rue de Rivoli were the main stores. At the moment, they are looking for another location besides the Champs Elysées. It should not be difficult, because they are not actually re-opening full department stores, but only shops with some of their star items, the clothing section will be only for women. In parallel, they want to open several "M&S Simply Food" shops throughout Paris to compete with the "Monop" superettes.

You don't have a Waitrose yet....simply the best chain of supermarkets.

Okay, I know you've all been waiting with bated breath, especially onlyMark, so here is the location of the upcoming Marks & Spencer on the Champs Elysées. It won't be a full M&S store, just ladies wear, lingerie and the supermarket. I assume that it will occupy the first two floors, and probably the food will be in the basement level.

I await with bated breath a report from the inside when it is open - just the food though.

The French may scoff at British cooking and fashion, but retailer Marks & Spencer reckons Parisians are yearning for its ready-made chicken tikka masala, gourmet chutney and sensible knickers.
The veteran British retailer opened a flagship store on Paris's Champs-Elysees on Thursday..........uk.news.yahoo.com/m-brings-comfy-knickers-curry-back-paris-105200898.html

Yes, one of my colleagues tried to go there but she said it was a madhouse with a huge queue to get in. We'll let a week or two pass. At the least they finally revealed where the second store is going to be -- at a new shopping mall in nearby Levallois. The Champs Elysées store is just a miniature showcase on 3 floors.
I do wonder if the "reporters" for the linked article were actually in Paris, though, since there was no cold or mist in which to queue. Perhaps they were confusing Paris with London...?

I just found out that the new M&S store might be closing down, or rather moving. The Virgin Megastore on the Champs Elysées is going to close, and M&S is one of the companies already queueing up to snap up the much better location. Apple also wants the spot.

If Marks & Sparks manages to nab the Megastore location, they will be able to rival the other main department stores of Paris. But the battle has not even really begun yet...
