Nice that you posted more pictures of the area, Kerouac. Did you still have to be fairly secretive when using your camera?

It is recommended to use an unobtrusive camera, be quick, and use a zoom when necessary.

I'm very familiar with the neighbourhood but haven't been there in a while. I just loved the literary clin d'oeil "Au bonheur des dames".
Looked up alokos plantain; simply the fried plantain mostly made by Haitian people here. And saw a Haitian shop - I'd be sure to drop by there out of homesickness!

Today there was a major tragedy on rue Myrha, which I have copiously photographed on this thread. A fire killed 8 people including 2 children. It is very much suspected to be arson, because a fire broke out around 2 a.m. which the firemen came to put out. It was just papers and boxes and not serious. The firemen cleared out all of the flammable material before leaving. And then another fire broke out at 4 a.m. and gutted the building. I actually arrived on the scene before the media after hearing the first news flash around 6:30 a.m. Naturally, I often want to witness such things myself, but I had another reason this morning -- my mother's nursing home is in the same block, facing the street on the other side. So many of the old buildings are just waiting to burn.

I love this neighbourhood, often sleep 500 m from there.. If as it seems it is arson, I hope they catch the guy and... what, in fact ? Dead people don't come back even if their murderer is found.

It appears that the suspect (once again) has major psychological problems. However, this case might solve another one from 3 years ago. Just 60 metres away on rue Stephenson, there was a fire that killed 3 people. No one was ever apprehended for that.

Hopefully they have apprehended the person responsible for both of these senseless acts so the people of this neighborhood can mourn their losses safely. What a horrible crime, just horrible.

What a heartbreaking tragedy. I'm glad to hear your mother is all right, K.

Just found out about this. You must have been beside yourself with worry when you realized where the fire was. Horrifying, senseless, and just terribly, terribly sad. I hope the people at your mother's home weren't too shaken up.

Frankly, I didn't even have time to imagine anything since I can walk there from home in 5 minutes. They mentioned the specific address that was burning without saying anything like "the blaze has spread to other buildings." It must be admitted that the fact that the old buildings are built out of stone and thick plaster makes it very rare for more than one building to be affected in a city like Paris, even when there is an inferno next door.
In terms of fatalities, this was the worst fire in Paris in 10 years.

Yes, there was a spate of these some years back, but there haven't been many for quite a while.
It is very suspicious considering that the building was renovated and in good shape. Those old buildings are very solid.
Pariswat, yes' I've always liked that area too. Is it a hotel where you stay?
