I'm interested in how you get on with the new camera Kerouac...thinking of going along to the local camera shop... I'm quite happy with it except for one thing. Even though this is my 4th or 5th Lumix, they keep changing the charging sockets. I just had to put the camera on the charger and had to go through every single cord to find the correct one (they are just the tiniest bit different -- enough to prevent an alien cord being attached, but the difference is so subtle that you practically need a magnifying glass to see the difference.) I am going to put a piece of coloured tape on the cord.

Understand completely. My beloved has lost the lead that I need to download the pics from my TZ5 to my laptop. He has loads of leads but none of them fit the port on the camera. I'm having to insert the memory card itself...which I don't like handling.

Rikita, I believe a telelens is a separate lens that is attached to a camera, whereas the multi-x Panasonics have the zooms built in. Fabulous photograph! i meant, how close a 90x zoom gets you translated in the terms of a telelens - i suppose, the purpose of a telelens and a zoom is pretty similar though ... i must admit though, i sometimes used my telelens to spy just a little bit, like wanting to see what people further away were doing (not spying on someone specific though).

Just don't touch the metal contacts (though I'd imagine they'd be OK if any fingermark is wiped off with a clean dry cloth). And there's the minor irritation of sliding the thing that locks it. But I do find it easier and quicker to use a card reader than fiddle about with an extra cable. My blog | My photos | My video clips | My Librivox recordings"too literate to be spam"

I have had ANOTHER camera die on me! First my Canon G-12 that took such nice photos got stuck with its lens in the extended position and I couldn’t get it to retract. So I went back to using my old Kodak Z-100 digital, which is far less satisfactory. Now THAT one has failed. It turns on and zooms and the shutter clicks, but the screen is black, and even though it has a viewfinder (useful since the screen is so hard to see in bright light), when I shoot a photo the saved image is black like the screen. My Dad had a identical Kodak, which I inherited, and it seems to work OK, BUT these old Kodaks use SD CHIPS, not the newer high-density chips with 4-letter names. And SD chips don’t seem to be unavailable anymore.
I was dreading shopping for - and paying for - a new camera, so I didn’t. My cell phone takes better pictures anyway and it’s so much easier to share directly from the phone (without needed to load them to a computer first) to email or Facebook or this forum. But my cell phone was getting old and slow, so I upgraded to a newer model. Not new, but newer. I still need to figure out how to save images from a phone to the computer or other external storage.
I may end up buying a new camera after all, so if anyone has a compact digital camera that they love, let me know the model.

Amazon sells SD cards, but you can probably get them in your local drugstore or walmart. Also, you can use a card out of your non-functioning camera. Put it in a different camera & reformat it.

The Canon uses the HD cards, so I can’t use those in the Kodak. I actually HAVE a 2 pack of SD cards but when I put them in the camera it says “needs formatting” but clicking to format doesn’t work. I even tried formatting them in the computer but when I put them back in the camera I still get the “needs formatting” message. Both SD cards are doing this. No idea why. Best Buy told me that the kind of SD I need isn’t made anymore, but maybe they don’t know what they’re talking about. to which Bixa replied:

I’ve been using different versions of the Sony RX100 after Bixa’s recommendation several years ago. They tend to be sharper and are what many professional photographers use for “walking around." They can be expensive, but you might be able to find an early or used model that would be satisfactory for your needs. Before my Sonys, I was using Panasonic Lumix point and shoot cameras, and liked them very much. B&H has one for less than $400: Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS70 Digital Camera (Black)

Which version are you on now, Htmb? I'm still on four. I think the quality of the pictures is not as good as before, but maybe because I keep using the same little bit of my memory card over and over again. I suggested the Sony RX100 to onlyMark when he was looking, but he eventually went with another camera. It was a great choice, because his photos with it have been stellar. Can't remember where he posted about it, so maybe he'll see this. And I agree about the Panasonic Lumix p&s cameras. Honestly, the Sony RX100s have never taken as good closeups as my little Panasonics consistently achieved. I think mossie has one of the fancier Panasonics and kerouac2 has had several of the Panasonic long-range ones, I believe.

I am still using a Lumix, and Mark bought the version just below mine (used, I think). Mossie has always used a Lumix, too.

Bixa, I have the RX100 model VI. It takes very clear photos that look sharp even when enlarged for print, IF you can hold it still enough when taking pics. It’s taken some practice on my part. It also has a fairly decent zoom, which is why I bought it, but it’s not the newest model by a few years. It also seems it’s hard to find older, used versions of the RX100 because they’re snapped up quickly.
My favorite camera, and the one I use most often, is my Sony RX10 Model IV, but it’s bulky, heavy, and is not cheap. It’s definitely not pocket-sized either. Both Sony cameras are fairly complex to use, in my opinion, and take a lot of patience and practice.

I have what K2 said. Bought it from Amazon Warehouse. Special cheap price. First customer of the day etc etc. Clear pictures and the zoom is that so powerful not only can I see from Spain the plants on Bixa's patio, but also the individual aphids. It was a toss up between K2's and Bixa's and just depended on which one I could get cheap.
