I just finished The Hunger Games trilogy and am recommending them to anyone who will listen. They take place in the vague future where every year, 24 children are forced into an arena to battle to the death on live television until one remains. These children are sacrificial "tributes" as punishment for a long-ago rebellion against the Capitol. That's all I'll say, and I suggest to everyone to just jump right it, don't even read the book jacket.
They are Young Adult novels, and despite the very adult subject matter, they are written in simple, unchallenging prose. The YA genre kind of has a bad rep (someone once joked that the section in the bookstore should just be called Vampires), but I'm not above picking up a book below my reading level, as long as it makes some sort of impact on me. And these books were fascinating, wrenching, and tautly written, and feature one of the complex heroines I've ever read.

Thanks so much for the recommendation, NYCGirl. I agree with you about YA novels. Some of them are so excellent in their subtle depths that they make you wonder why there aren't more "deep" books written for adults. Also, the element of fantasy in many YA books is vastly appealing.
