Nycgirl, You managed to get some great shots of the animals. Were you that close to the tarantula? Lizards don't bother me but I got the shivers looking at the hairy legs on the spider! Did you put your sunglasses next to it for perspective or did you discover the tarantula when you were reaching for your sunglasses?
When we used to go hiking in the mountains, I always liked seeing the mountain goats. I felt the same way about them that you did about the bighorn sheep. I would look up, spot one and wonder "How are you standing on that narrow ledge?" And then they would show off by jumping from one precipice to another.

Aw, say it ain't so, nycgirl! Surely you'd be better off making another quick trip to the southwest instead of staying in that nasty snow.

Thanks! We put the sunglasses there for perspective. It did not like that at all, and rose on its legs in an effort to look big and intimidating. It certainly succeeded! But although it's a wicked-looking creature and it does bite, it's not venomous so not particularly dangerous. It is amazing what rock-climbing animals can do, isn't it? We even saw a couple of baby bighorns doing some impressive scrambling. Aw, say it ain't so, nycgirl! Surely you'd be better off making another quick trip to the southwest instead of staying in that nasty snow. I wish. I'm starting to get seasonal depression already.

I'm starting to get seasonal depression already. I've heard that the best cure for seasonal depression is to post some more photos of NYC. Didn't the Statue of Liberty just celebrate her 125th b'day in New York? After visiting the Musee des arts ets metiers last Saturday, I'm on a quest to find out how many statues of Lady Liberty there are in Paris. The current count is 3.

Yeah, and you know, I've always wanted to go to the Statue of Liberty but never have. I've been saving it as an activity to do with my out-of-town visitors, but none of them seem remotely interested. I should just go. Looking forward to seeing the results of your scavenger hunt.

Going back to Utah at the end of this week! We're really excited. We're going to hike places that even my husband has never seen before, and he's been seven times.

Enjoying re-visiting this fabulous thread, since my sister asked for tips on where to hike in Utah. (Rather than reinvent the wheel I'm sending her a link to NYC boy & girls fabulous threads!)

I meant to post this a long time ago, (along with so many other posts...).
Anyway, this is a wonderful thread and brings back some bittersweet memories of time spent in this region.
I know that I could not live landlocked like that. I have to be around some large body of water (even if it means vulnerability to devastating storms, hurricanes, floods etc.).
I had even applied to go to undergraduate school in Arizona, was accepted but chose Boston instead.
Again, a wonderful portrait of this region.
Thank you.

Thanks for reminding me about this report. It's nice for me to see this and take a trip down memory lane. Unfortunately, though, I'm noticing some of my links are broken. Casi, I know what you mean about water. I love being near water, although I don't think I could take how cold Boston gets. Kimby, if your sister has any questions, feel free to send them my way!

That was in 1971 and I didn't stay but a year. I could never live year round in the North, BRRRRRRRRR!! I wouldn't mind spending summers there on the seashore.
I was in Nevada for a month in 1976 in the summer. Dry, dry heat. My hair was like straw. I would go for long rides in the desert on a mare named "Lucille". Out in the middle of nowhere. There was a bar called The Please U. I used to hitch Lucille up, give her some water and a rest while I went and had a couple of ice cold beers. Some real characters in that place.

NYC, will you be raising up your daughter to be a desert rat, too?

Casi, your summer in Nevada sounds like such fun! Could be the start of a Western adventure story.
Kimby, I'll definitely be taking the little one there. I want her to appreciate nature as well as city life.

Car camping in the desert with a little one sounds like so much fun. Free-camping is so easy with all the public land and enticing two-track roads leading to canyon rims with breathtaking views.

I just received amazing news today. I mentioned before on this thread that only 20 people a day are permitted to visit the spectacularly beautiful area called The Wave. Out of those 20, only 10 win the lottery permits online (the other 10 must show up in person to win). I just got an email informing me that I won a permit for 4 people! Looks like NYCbaby is getting her first trip to Utah this December!
