I am going to have to go crawling around on my hands and knees upstairs, because I can smell the dead little beast more every day. I found a trap that had been sprung a few days ago, but there was nothing in it. Now the smell is getting sronger, but my first search revealed nothing, even using my good flashlight. It clearly crawled away to die, but I hope it wasn't under the floorboards.

Cheer up K2. Their little bodies mummify before too long, and stop stinking.

The stink lingers. Also, any fleas the mouse was hosting will leap from its dead body onto the next warm-blooded creature it encounters. You might want to apply insect spray in the vicinity of where the body is.

Rats are much much worse. Too large to mummify like mice. And no, I won't lend Livia out as a ratter; she is far too small. A friend had rats in her cellar last winter. Yecch. They also shit a lot; not cute little mice pellets.

I am pretty sure it is under the floorboards now, because really the only time I smell it is when I go upstairs, just as my nose is level with the upper floor. The is one panel that I can pull off to see the space under the floor, but that is only in one direction. I already looked and saw nothing. At least the smell is not getting worse.

The dead creature is definitely inaccessible without dismantling the panels around the stairs. However, in the one zone that I can get to, I found an old glue trap with a small patch of fur in it -- everything else had disappeared. So I can only hope that the same thing happens this time. I think it must have reached its maximum stink level by now, so I am hoping that it won't be as bad by the end of the weekend.

I returned from a nice long walk in the woods, picking up colored leaves, to find that my reading glasses were no longer in my pocket. :-(
I’ve (tried to) retraced my steps twice now to no avail, so visited the dollar store to pick up a new pair of 3.25 readers. 2nd trauma: they cost not 1 dollar, but 6 whole dollars. But I can’t function without strong readers, so bought them anyway.

I’m glad you can celebtate what is, while still lamenting what might have been, whatagain. I think Robin would be proud of his sisters, and also glad that his Dad can be happy despite his sadness. Soldier on. It’s all we can do.
(I’d already had my wine when I read this, so I hope it’s OK that I had a bowl of chocolate fudge ice cream in Robin’s honor!)

I applaud you, Whatagain, and am in admiring awe of your ability to count your blessings in the face of such painful sorrow. ❤️

Robin lives on in your heart. That is important.

So sorry whatagain. I don’t know what I would do if I lost any of mine ( and we nearly have).

I admire your courage in facing what has happened, Whatagain, and that you are able to carry on and appreciate and love what you still have.

It is always tough facing up the loss of a child. We lost our daughter when she was 19, nearly 40 years ago now but it still hurts, but is never forgotten.

These traumas are anything but petty! 😥
So here’s a petty one. I spaced out and slathered my face with hand lotion after my shower. I meant to put it on my arms and legs, but the Trump chaos has got me very distracted lately.

Does that mean that your face is now going to look like that wiggly part on the lower side of your arms?

Now that’s a cheery thought! (And how did YOU know about that wiggly spot?)

Kimby, for the life of me I cannot figure out what is traumatic about that.

Well I did say “petty”. I only like the feel of one moisturizer lotion by Loreal that I’ve used for decades. Hand lotion is SO slimy! Plus my face now smells like my legs.

Where we are has a bad television schedule. All three networks AND BBC run their national/international newscasts during the same 1/2 hour time slot! How am I supposed to get my daily overdose of news?

It is all bad news anyway, why bother?

I get my news off websites (the Guardian and NY Times), as well as watching France24 when I can at 6pm. I have also basically given up on the BBC -- it has become really lousy with little news and too much "general interest", which doesn't interest me.

It is all bad news anyway, why bother? I like to be well-informed (if that’s possible anymore) so I can debate and hopefully educate my poorly (mis-) informed friends and neighbors in Red State Montana...

I have also basically given up on the BBC -- it has become really lousy with little news and too much "general interest", which doesn't interest me. Ditto, minus France24 of course. I also have the Washington Post and Follow various news sites on FB. Shockingly true about BBC, which is a grayer, scantier version of the MSN home page. For years I have mostly hated television news, with its excess of talking heads and pundits telling us what to think about the news. Reading the news for oneself isn't protection against slanted journalism, but as an innately slower, denser, and more contemplative experience, it gives one a fighting chance of grasping the facts and how they might matter. As we say here ' quel blaireau '. I looked that up on WordReference. Excellent, useful word!

"Quel blaireau" could be loosely translated as "what a dope!"

Why does the translator yield “badger” then? Is a badger a dope?

Another search produces “What a moron! What a buffoon!” Perfect Trump descriptor.
Perhaps someday dictionaries will list “trump” as synonymous with moronic or corrupted....

Literally, it means badger. But just like other animal words, it has additional meanings. You know of rats, weasels, sheep, hawks and doves, I presume.
