Well, it isn't a disaster such as the one in parts of California, but there are still many people without power. At least it is chilly enough that they might not lose all their food if they put it outside on a porch, balcony or other unheated space. Many trees down. As I'd written elsewhere on the site, the news media seem very fond of photos of trees coming down on fancy cars.
The municipal tree surgeons were fast, effective and courteous. They had a laugh at Livia staring at them out the window as they were working. Probably all they could see were her eyes. The tree is in much better shape than I had feared.
There is also flooding in low-lying areas. We are on fairly high ground. Some of these low-lying areas get flooded almost every year now, with climate change.

Our TV antenna/ poster has failed and we are missing the crucial channel with 3 hours to go before the Green Bay Packers game!
Mr. Kimby is rummaging through his junk drawers to see if he can cobble together pieces-parts to make it work again. If not, we’ll be spending the afternoon in a tavern with big-screen TVs. Thankfully smoking is no longer allowed indoors.

Some day you will enter the cable or satellite world, like it or not. And have high speed internet.
Meanwhile, I got over my little problem of rotting mouse smell within a week, but now I am in phase II. I have had to hunt down about 15 flies over the last three days.

I've been banned from Facebook group in Zambia. Expelled. I disagreed with the moderator regarding the necessity of road blocks for the same thing over a stretch of road. He said a mild insult to me in return, i.e. "In my field of study I can't learn anything from a poor teacher like you, maybe home economics you can teach me in three long sentences...."
On a different thread he made all sorts of noises about us all being together, toleration etc etc. Respecting the views of others. I repeated his insult back to him and asked him to look up the meaning of hypocrisy. He immediately banned me.
I'm distraught. Won't sleep tonight.

Some day you will enter the cable or satellite world, like it or not. And have high speed internet. Nope. Not paying the big bucks for what we can get for free. Nor dealing with horrid “Customer Care departments. And we DO have high-speed internet, but only when the number of users is low (late night, early morning, during school hours). So it’s not us, it’s them (Verizon). And we’ve narrowed it down to a failing signal booster. By cleaning up the contacts and disconnecting the UHF antenna, we are getting the VHF stations again. We have a spare booster at home, so are spared watching the game on barstools, nursing a token beer or two for 3 hours.

Mark, how disconsolate you must be! It is well known that there are some moderators who use the position to become petty tyrants. All that happens is that they become petty wankers. Take to heart the wise words of the great Groucho Marx... ‘I don’t care to belong to any club that will have me as a member’.

My petty personal trauma is that the facilitators on this forum are wimpily called "helpers". Why NOT "petty wankers"? It has a ring!

I have folded my tent and quietly slipped away from at least 3 sites. If the main purpose of the forum is to make sport of put-downs, insults, verbal abuse and bullying. If the mods are playing it like a blood sport and there are constant complaints about unfairness...hey, I don't need this.
The bunch of travellers and skilled people who have been washed up in this port, sheltering from the storm and exchanging stories, show a respect for each other, even when they have different ideas. I sometimes think a bit of healthy debate could be fun, but not at the expense of hurting others. As for 'helpers'...it is the role you play. Maybe 'Guru' or 'thread repairer' or 'show the dummy how to do it' would be applicable, but they all mean 'helper'.
The storms outside can be of many types, fear, illness. loneliness, needing support in natural disaster etc. We are lucky to have good helpers/petty wankers to keep the respect going.

Update - there are three moderators with power to ban or return a member on that site. One of them contacted me and said he couldn't see any problem with what I'd been saying. All healthy stuff, nothing vindictive etc. But, he did say he would try and reinstate me but it meant getting at least one of the other two to agree.
Communications from him have now ceased and I think he must have been out voted. C'est la vie.

I have a malware attacking both of my computers just about every time I log into Anyport. It's one of those panicky uncloseable pop up deals with huge red warnings that my computer is totally infected and I must click on the repair button or else everything on the computer will be deleted in 30 seconds or some such. If I am quick, I can close it before it even finishes opening. Otherwise, I have to quickly select "restart" and then cancel it when given the opportunity. Unfortunately, sometimes I am not fast enough and I have to go through a complete restart session anyway. After that, the malware leaves me alone for a few hours.
The reason that Anyport is one of the only sites attacked among those that I visit is because it is just http instead of https.

www.malwarebytes.com/When that happens to me I run the above, Malwarebytes. I downloaded the free version a few years ago and it doesn't offer real time protection for free, but it is comprehensive in getting rid of malware.

Thanks for that, Mark! Kerouac, do you have adblockers on your computer? Because of all my p*rate streaming, I have at least three & they also do a good job of blocking the kind of creepy popup you mention. For anti-virus, Kapersky is free and will keep you from even entering a contaminated site. usa.kaspersky.com/free-antivirus

I've noticed a lot of sites now won't let you see the pages unless you disable your adblocker - just like Proboards. I rely on the inbuilt software on Firefox and Chrome, if there is any, plus on the standard Windows Defender. I may have jinxed it now but, not really had problems apart from some popups that came one time on Firefox and I soon got rid of them via Googling the problem.
By the way, I avoid Kapersky, mainly because it often comes bundled in when you buy a new laptop and is devilishly difficult to get rid of or it can interfere with any other antivirus software you use, but also because the bloke it an idiot. There was one other quite powerful system cleaner available, for free, I had to use it once on a recommendation from a problem solving IT forum but can't recall the name for now. If it comes back to me I'll post it.

I was being plagued with those warnings on Any Port (only) on my iPhone. I would just close the Safari browser, and sometimes turn off and on the phone. Now that you mention it, it hasn’t happened in weeks, though it was bothersome for awhile. Can the moderators, I mean helpers, request of ProBoards that an “s” be added to http to eliminate these hassles? Or is that how they get us to sign up for the paid “ad-free” version?

By the way, regarding computer malware etc, the site I used to sort it out, and it required a forum post where everyone is very friendly, has also guides on most of the common problems. It can the some dedication to find exactly what you want, but in 99.999999% of the cases, it will be there somewhere. It all depends on how frustrated you are. www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/Many guides they give always use Malwarebytes, and other free software.

The only pop-up I get is at the bottom of the screen from proboards, despite my adblocker. I also have Ghostery and am under Linux so don't get anything else.

A chap youngest used to knock about with when he was clubbing...in wilder days, has moved back into the area (moved in with his Dad). Son doesnt have anything to do with this lad (he's 38) but for some reason he seems to have latched on to Russell and keeps turning up at the door...he's an alcoholic and always plastered...is obviously on his way to an early grave ...and has now started thinking that Jeff and I are his friends too....
This evening I had words. Told him that he was a lovely chap but that he was killing himself and that he needed to get a grip, seek help and give up the booze. I feel terrible but I really don't want him in our home..we don't know him...its just that he's alienated everybody else in his life. I said that he should stop trying to drag Russell to the pub as he doesnt drink because of his crohns...he doesnt listen. Russ said that as he left he accused Russell of telling me about the drinking...no Stephen (said Russell) you stink of vodka...
Sorry..I'm not feeling particularly good about my lack of charity...
