All day on my French Google News feed, there has been a headline saying "She thought she just had a pimple above her eye. She should have never pierced it!"
I do not want to know anything more about this.

We are replacing the worn out roof on our Sanibel house which has survived TWO hurricanes in its almost 25-year life.
It was going real well until the rain gutters were pulled down and one rammed right into the lanai screening, leaving a huge triangular tear. ☹️
On the plus side, the tear-off crew did a great job cleaning up the driveway and yard, using magnets to search for stray nails and picking up postage stamp-sized pieces of roofing that missed the tarps they’d laid to protect the vegetation and collect the debris shoveled off the roof.
I sure hope they don’t get poison ivy! (I’d have warned them about it if I knew the words in Spanish....)

I stuck my neck out today. I'm selling my car. A man came to look and we disagreed on a technical aspect. We were both convinced we were right. He brought a mechanic with him to examine the car as well. The mechanic said I was wrong and also he rang someone who also said I was wrong.
I told him that if he was right, and we can check by looking at the manufacturer's specifications and advice, he can have the car for half price. But if I was right he has to pay the full price and there is no negotiation.
I was right and I've sold the car for the asking price, but I sweated a bit.

Some people just like a touch of danger in their lives.
I don't feel sorry for new owner but mechanic was put between a rock and a hard place.

The mechanic was a decent bloke, but it often seems in this society that beliefs of all sorts are held that seem to have come from the sister's ex-boyfriend's daughter's hairdresser and are held as gospel. I take part in a couple of local forums regarding driving, mechanics and life in the country and I'm constantly surprised by the 'beliefs' that come up from simple things like it's illegal to reverse into your driveway to it being the law, when it isn't, that you must display a photo of the President in your house. I agree, the mechanic and whoever he phoned up, may well have been in a difficult position but there's nothing I can do about that. For K2 -

After months of research on current best practices for roofing in Florida’s hurricane zone, we are finally getting a new roof. The old one was pretty used up after 25 years and two hurricanes. That’s the good news.
The bad news is that despite interviewing and getting bids from 4 roofing companies, checking reviews, going over the fine print in the contract, paying extra for the “Golden Warranty” that covers damage incurred by up to 130 mph winds, the roofing crew is IGNORING the manufacturers’ instructions about number of nails per shingle, special starter shingles at the rake edges as well as the horizontal eaves, and how to do step-flashing around the skylights they replaced.
A roof leak around a skylight can now be denied by both the skylight manufacturer and the shingle manufacturer!
The roofers mostly don’t speak English, so we are listening to the pops of the nailguns and shouting “Senor, SEIS!”
On the plus side, it IS a much better roof than the old one it replaces. And the crew said they’ll stay till it’s done, even using lights if the sun goes down.
On Friday before a rainy weekend, this is a good thing. IF they can see to do a decent job. Hope it looks good in the morning!

Had day surgery yesterday at the local hospital. Excellent staff and all went well, home in 5 hours. Procedure was called “[Bladder neck resection” for you medical experts, otherwise have nothing to do with it. Still bleeding into the little bag strapped to my leg, which has to be emptied fairly often. BY ME !

I guess in that case, it's a good thing you have a bag!
I hope this all passes soon.

I have received a reminder from the tax office about the tax I didn't pay. It was the tax on unoccupied flats in Paris, except that it happens to be the place where I have been living for the last 29 years. A 10% penalty has been added to the amount.
I have stapled the notification that I owe nothing, which I received from the very same tax office, to their reminder, and I will mail it to them tomorrow.
Right now I am debating adding "don't forget to cancel the 10% penalty, too" because I had a similar situation about 35 years ago where they said that I had not paid something which I had paid (there were fewer computers then). I had proof of payment, so they cancelled the amount but not the 10% penalty. It took another 3 or 4 months to get them to cancel that as well. Are tax offices the same everywhere in the world?

Short answer: yes.

I had a brief moment of panic today while I was sitting downstairs at the computer. Suddenly I heard an intense crackling fire in my flat, all the more strange without smoke or heat. I quickly determined that it came from upstairs, where there was obviously no fire. The noise was caused by a sudden hailstorm hitting the roof windows. It only lasted for a minute or two, but I was extremely relieved that my residence was not going up in flames.

I’ll bet! Aren’t you worried the hail might damage your roof, though?

Post by kerouac2 on Feb 6, 2020 15:09:41 GMT
No, we don't get hail that big in Paris (at least not more than once in a century).
Today I had one of those days where something went wrong with every single domestic task -- in the kitchen, in the bedroom, in the living room and in the bathroom. The only safe places left are the closet and the WC.

It's terrible when things go wrong in the bedroom. Happens more and more often as you get older.
So I've heard.

Cheery, have you tried to drink more water while you are taking your magic potion? Some times the early sign of dehydration is a headache.

Thanks Questa...I must admit that the temptation has been not to drink as much as I usually do so that I don't have to get up and down to the loo.....naughty CPB I've been drinking more today mind you I haven't taken the painkillers during the day as my pain has eased quite a lot. Trying to hobble about more too.

My petty personal trauma is: I can’t find the « there I was without my camera » thread. I’ve searched and searched, but can’t find anything close. I’ve been driving for the last seven hours, so I’m guessing I can blame my problem on my blurry eyes.
