Just so long as you don't have to post "our flight to Buenos Aires was cancelled" on this thread.

Kerouac, I'll take your ugly processor! Mich, that's a double tragedy. It's not just the money, it's not just having to go out and get new stuff, it's that we really want and like and are used to the ones we had. And I didn't know Sears had gone bankrupt -- just that they were in trouble. Are all the stores closing/closed? My mother told me that the Penney's in her town had closed this past year. Not that I love Penney's, but in that small town there were certain items which I could count on buying in that store. Also, they'd adjust your watch band for free even if you didn't buy it in Penney's -- small town pleasantry. Questa ~ ay yi yi!

It is always a shock when the stores of our childhood close. Even though we didn't have a Montgomery Ward anywhere nearby and not even until my parents moved to Florida, it was a shock when they went out of business, just as Woolworths disappeared in the United States -- still going strong in Australia and probably some other countries, though.

Bixa I am not sure if Sears USA is closing but ALL Sears Canada stores are in the midst of inventory sell off closure sales. The Sears in our city did well and over the past few years was always saved when new closures were being announced as the company was declining. I never thought it would actually close. After my injury I could not shop in stores for a few years and became a loyal on-line shopper but slowly could see the service decline. I was a little sad not getting the Christmas catalogue this year, many childhood memories receiving them.

Ohhh ~ so true about the Christmas catalogue! My brother and I used to pore over it when we were living in Spain.
Do check out the big sales. My stainless tableware -- fairly expensive Oneida -- was bought at a great price when Montgomery Ward went out of business. Maybe you can get good deals on a new electric teakettle and a toaster.

Cheery...Is your dog a German Shorthaired Pointer? They are bred to 'freeze' instead of your computer.

When we overhauled our kitchen a couple of years ago I bought tea, coffee and sugar caddies that matched the kitchen units...and then I got a nice kitchen aid mixer in a contrasting colour...and because the mixer was such a luscious red I had to get a matching kitchen aid kettle... It never ends...and I already have loads of stuff. I need to de-clutter.... De-cluttering to me means getting rid of rubbish....but a lot of our excess STUFF is nice excess stuff. I need a spare house. I suppose I could donate it all to a Charity shop....

Five children taking turns circling items in the catalogue, it makes me smile to remember our dreams.
I was actually hoping to get a snow blower but items like that never seem to get to the floor during these type of sales. Perhaps checking in Ottawa this weekend might be a better idea!

Have you tried Craig’s List? With so many northerners becoming snowbirds and fleeing to Florida and other warmer climes, there must be a lot of snowblowers gathering dust in northern garages.

At first I thought you wanted a snow blower as a child, but then again who wouldn't? No, two separate thoughts. Although my brother might have had one circled as one of his chores was the shovelling.

I do not know if we even have Craig's List where I live, but we do have something similar called Kijiji so I will look there, excellent suggestion Kimby!

mich, I hear you about Sears. I bought several pairs of shoes there in recent years, on sale. Good walking shoes like Clarks etc but dressy enough to wear when working in offices or conferences. Also the dreaded "foundation garments" (what a Victorian category), namely bras. How in hell is one supposed to buy such things over the internet, when sizing varies so widely?
I suppose I'll visit a couple of the stores on clearance, but there is NO indication of what merchandise is on sale there... The closest is 8km from my house - yes, there is a bus that goes there, but it is a pain to go there for nothing.

Lagatta, I too relied on Sears for footwear and bras, I also usually would go there when I needed to buy a gift for wedding or baby showers, I was a fan of their gift registry. If I hear of specific items being reduced, I will PM you, it makes sense the stores will liquidating in the same way. I found a very nice bra at Giant Tiger this summer, just happened to stop in for something else, so I guess I will try there again in future. Really, where else do we go now? The only store left here is Walmart, I do not enjoy going there, I have panic attacks before I even get into the store, too big, too noisy, too many people.

Yes, all seems to be accurate as to how people are feeling and experiencing. Noted that snow blowers are at 10% at this point. Oh well, I will wait and see.

The problem with this sort of liquidation is that all of the products that are not specifically for the Canadian market can just be shipped to stores south of the border if they are not sold.

I'll use the tactic to eat the elephant : first a foot, then ... "Do you want fries with that?" Glad to see you listed health as the first concern. The rest will sort itself out. 'Worry' is one of the 2 useless emotions...achieves nothing but makes you sick ('guilt' is the other) Be happy!

Yesterday I saw on my telephone that I had missed a call from my grandparents' village. It was from Gertrude, who was a good friend of my grandmother and who has taken care of all of the family graves all of these years (with a little bit of financial compensation). I tried to call back but there was no answer, so I tried again today. Her husband Marcel answered. And therefore I learned that Gertrude died of a heart attack on the 18th (age 85) but since she was in charge of "everything," nobody knew how to contact me. I would have attended the funeral, but it is actually a relief not to have had to do so. I made a report about a family birthday party that I attended six and a half years ago: A Franco-German fiestaThe past is slipping away.
