Bixa - Congratulations on those three fab photos! So clear and precise - the bee was definitely doing a good job. I don't recognise the flower with it's beautiful jaggered inner petals?

Thank you, Tod! Yeah, the way that bee was going at the flower, it felt slightly obscene to be pointing a camera at the action. The flower blows me away, as it's something I've seen a zillion times in my life, but never noticed the inner petals until I started taking close-up pictures of it. (see pics 5 & 6 in Reply#872 here)It's an oleander!

It's time this class of creatures had their own photo thread. Post (or re-post) at will. [/quote]

Thanks, Cheery. I don't know how to keep the camera from capturing the iridescence of the flower petals and of the skipper's wings. It reflects light back, creating that loud glare.

Wow, Bixa and Cheery, these are all so beautiful!
I love the chubby, fuzzy bees. They're so cute.

T'anks, honeybunch! It's was easy to get a picture of the greedy creature, as all it cared about was sucking that feeder dry.

Thanks, Cheery -- & I'm taking Kimby's reaction as a compliment, too! ;D
It is a wasp, I believe. Isn't it a magnificent thing? I think it's an envoy from a superior civilization in a galaxy far, far away. The three dots on its forehead show its high status. Don't you love the dowel pegs clearly visible on the joints? Such an elegant creature.
The stance assumed in the last two pictures was after it noticed my looming camera. Did you see my amazing bit of photographic luck in the 3rd pic?

I think it's an envoy from a superior civilization in a galaxy far, far away. Let's hope its civilization is far away! Did you see my amazing bit of photographic luck in the 3rd pic? ...she said modestly, when no one had pointed out how fantabulous the mini-me wasp was! (Which makes me wonder, is the big one a foot long?!?!!!! ?!!!!

or is the mini-me really an ant? (and therefore just a cousin)

It was modest -- honest! I didn't even know it was there until I saw the picture.
The big one is regular wasp size -- @1".

All of these photos are amazing. I don't visit this thread as often as I should since I have no photos to post. All we have are ugly bugs in Paris, and even when I try to get bees, they move too fast because they are city bees in a hurry.

Cheery, what a sweet fuzzy fellow. Almost looks cuddly, till you remember he packs a stinger on that cute little bottom!
