I think the official name is just the "Pride Parade" now. I saw in the Sunday paper that the gay police and gendarmes had a float for the first time (although it was not their first participation).
Frankly, I was delighted that the NY gay marriage law had just been passed, because the latest attempt at a French law was voted down again just this week (in spite of the fact that 67% of the French public is in favor of it).

Excellent. Paris is having a cheesy carnival next Sunday, but I currrently have no plans to see it. There is no tradition of carnivals in this city. well theoretically there is no tradition of carnival here either, but well, some cultural groups and immigrant groups decided to start it, started out as a really small festival too, but has been growing every year... so maybe you could start a carnival in paris?

Actually, I think this is the 10th edition already, but I have still never seen it.

Terrible dilemma... on the same day there is this on the Champs Elysées: www.carnavaltropicaldeparis.fr/... or the 20th Ratha Yatra parade (which I have never seen either) from Place de la Bataille de Stalingrad to the center of Paris at the same time, including an Indian market at Les Halles, Indian dances and free vegetarian dinners.

the carnaval tropical looks very much like the carnaval of cultures, or parts of it...
hm but both sound interesting... can't you combine both some way? go to one for a few hours, and then to the other?

The endless inventiveness of all the costumes is fascinating and exciting. Love the Caribbean dancers. Rikita, in that last pic, you really, really caught how the participants managed to bring the whole feel and taste of where they're from to the middle of a street in Berlin. Love it!

Thanks! Here are some more... Some of the participants want to photograph the other groups: Others try to arrange where to meet their friends: Yet others just enjoy the music:

Remarkable. I will start posting what I saw of the "Carnaval Tropical de Paris" soon. There are some striking similarities.

How lucky you are Rikita to be able to witness such a lively and colourful parade! Super photos too. Looking forward to see what Kerouac is going to show us as well......

Rikita, you have made me really interested in Berlin, which seems like such a lively and varied city. I know your life is very busy, but I'm greedy, & would love to see a thread(s) on regular, non-festival Berlin, too. What's your part of town like, for instance?

That last photo is great -- and the black and white makes it much more striking than if it were multi-hued.
