Not online much atm. I'm spending quite a lot of time with a family member who is going through a rough patch atm, but I'm still popping on here occasionally. Hopefully all will turn out well and I will be back when I can. X

In my neighbourhood, they recently cleaned out a lot where a car repair garage used to be and they found a half dozen bottles of acetone which had been abandoned there for years, just waiting to explode. That is unfortunately a more common occurrence than people realize. Also, unlicensed (therefore, never inspected) part-time businesses/garages harbour all sorts of hidden dangers when a call comes in. Glad they found those bottles!

agnes' grommet is going to be taken out tomorrow ... i was hoping it'd fall out by itself, to spare her another surgery (even if it is just a very small one), but it didn't ... well, let's hope it goes as smoothly as the last one ...

Retirement day yesterday. My boss made a lovely speech about me. I never realised how wonderfl I am.
They gave me a £500 voucher for a heritage Pullman car steam train trip and £150 voucher for art. I honestly couldn’t be happier.

Join the club Mick. Some express reservations about retirement with the thought of "What am I going to do?" Have you get plans? Tentative or otherwise?

Garden work will take up a fair amount of time but not so good in winter.
More cooking.
Lose weight.
Watch more cricket.
Travel more, income willing.
Win lottery.

You may have noticed there is contradiction between more cooking, watch more cricket and lose weight?

If I were to send money to anyone, it would probably be you, Mick. Big, big congratulations and welcome to the wonderful world of owning all your own time. That was a great send-off you got from work and the gifts they gave show that they really know and value you.

You could cash in your insurances.

You could cash in your insurances. My kids could repay their debts! That would certainly help but I’m not holding my breath... Broadstairs Kent next week. Broadstairs was superbly covered by tod2 but we are going to Folkestone and Canterbury so I will cover them. Beziers in France mid April and then a month in Spain October/November.

Before I retired, work seemed to fill my life. I never seemed to have time for myself. After I retired I became so busy that I wondered where I ever found time to go to work.

I was always told that before I retired (notably by my parents who were constantly busy) and couldn't believe it. Now I understand.

That is quite true.
When you do your East Kent tour I will be pleased to hear what it is like now. I was brought up in the village of Elham, midway between Folkestone and Canterbury, and went to a grammar school in Canterbury from the age of 11 until my general Schools exams which started on my 16th birthday, which thrilled me tremendously. (I don't think)
Have a great retirement, and don't do anything I wouldn't do. (That allows considerable scope)

It is freezing, it is snowing, it is dull.
And yet I am suddenly excited that I will soon be gardening again- and have unlimited time for it.
I am a frustrated artist - I can’t draw or paint but I can grow plants quite well.

Mossie, I haven’t been to Folkestone in years but my daughter went there for a wedding last year and really loved it.

I enjoy sneezing violently. I like the way it feels. Of course, you cannot appreciate it if you make a spectacle of yourself in public. I also read recently that it can be a health risk for certain people.

The paroxysm of s sneeze has been compared to orgasm. And wasn’t there a sweet scene in a Steve Martin movie in which his girlfriend had her first sexual rapture while sneezing?

I was amazed when I checked the rates of the Hôtel Dieu hotel about a month ago. I thought it would have "social" rates, but everything was listed over 100 euros.
I bought a new wall radiator about a month ago to replace the one that is not working. It is still sitting in its box. I am planning on having it installed by the workers who did my kitchen and who still need to put in a backsplash panel, but since I keep putting off my SMS to the person in charge, I think the radiator will be installed when it is no longer needed this year. Does this mean that I am saving money?

Yesterday I glanced at the digital clock on my oven and saw that it was six minutes off. That seemed quite weird since even though clocks like that are not perfect, they do not stray from real time very quickly. I reset the time, no problem.
On today's news, the newsreader suddenly said "have you noticed on some of your electronics at home that the clock is six minutes off?" Ovens and other kitchen equipment were mentioned, but also clock radios, hifi systems, etc.
The explanation was the European power grid. Apparently two countries have been abusing the system (we will not name names here) and reducing their contribution. It is not at all noticeable when you are using a coffee maker or an oven since it is just a fraction off the proper level, but it does affect the clocks on these devices. Supposedly everything is back to normal now, but I'm keeping an eye on those clocks.

Does this mean that I am saving money? Make sure you run it enough to make sure it works, because the warranty clock starts when it’s purchased, delivered or installed. Even if you don’t use it till November.

Supposedly everything is back to normal now, but I'm keeping an eye on those clocks. I saw that my oven/microwave/alarm clocks were 6 minutes off when we came home on Sunday. Yesterday I indeed heard one explanation but then looked up the information. It's not that two countries have been "abusing the system". Kosovo wants more input and influence in the European energy commission that runs the European energy grid so it suddenly dropped its contribution. Serbia is supposed to make up Kosovo's difference but won't because of historical annoyance. This is interesting since neither Serbia nor Kosovo are part of the EU so I hadn't realized they were integrated into the electricity supply network. Anyway, it is supposed to be resolved fairly soon.
