Your dog has no nose? ... How does it smell?
... *waits for punchline, rotten tomatoes and getting dragged offstage with a hook*

I don't mind mopping my kitchen floor because the space is so small that it only takes 5 minutes.

The apartment where I stayed in Amsterdam had one of those laminated wood floors & the mop was a Swiffer. It was the first time I'd used one & I was dubious, but wound up favorably impressed.

Yes, people swear by Swiffer in Europe. I have one, but I always forget to use it.

I was sort of a silent film comedy the first time I did it, since I don't really know how to use one. (Yes, I have a computer. Yes, I should have looked it up. No, I still haven't done that.)
The first time I put water in a bucket & added the Pledge product for that type floor. Then there was puzzlement because the Swipper head is too wide to fit into any normal bucket. I put the bucket in the shower stall, then dipped one side & then the other of the Swiffer into it. This made it sopping wet, so I grasped each side in turn and did what I could to squeeze the excess water out. I was pleased with how the thing mopped, but figured all was not well in the wetting-the-head department.
The next time I mopped, I put the water and Pledge into a large measuring cup and, holding the Swiffer head into the shower stall, dribbled the solution on to it. This was less messy and the floor got equally clean. It's probably not the right way, though.

My swiffer has the moppy bit attached by velcro to the head. I just take it off, wet it in hot clean water and spray the wooden floor cleaner onto it...then re-attach and clean....it's a bit of a faff but its efficient.

The one I used was rather wide and had a button to push so it would fold. It needed to fold because the moppy bit, as you call it ( ) was a strip of towel with a square pocket at either end to go over the head. Probably if I had stayed there longer I eventually would have evolved enough to figure out your more efficient method.

My retired parents always said they were busy all the time when it seemed to me that they had all the time in the world. Now I understand them.

But I seem to have less time than ever - don't know how I ever managed to work full time :)Anyway what have I missed Luuuugg!!!! I have been wondering and wondering about you. So great to hear from you and to learn that you're on the road to retirement. Have you been having fun? I remember you mentioned a few times that you might have more free time soon, so I guess "soon" finally arrived. Congratulations. As to what you missed ~ well, you're going to have to comb through to see who has been doing what since your last visit. (We'll expect a report in triplicate, collated and with colored tabs or folders separating the sections. If too thick to staple, please have it bound. ) Anyway, whatcha been doing with all that new free time? Tell all, please!

Well my lot are dropping like flies...so much illness in the family (I won't go into detail) but it's safe to say that I've been a tad distracted. I suppose that the law of averages dictates that as one gets older more and more of one's circle of dear ones will fall over...anyway. We seem to be going through a pretty shitty decade...I'm popping over when I can..don't forget me.

Sorry to read about the year you are having Cheery, hugs and support being sent! I have been absent for similar reasons, personally and attending to family members. I come on when I can, it is always a warm respite and takes my mind off events.

I inadvertently somehow managed to delete my account while on here upon my return from NY.
It was 3 a.m. and my brain was truly fried and frazzled.
(the free cocktails on the plane did not help matters).

Oh, thank goodness you're back, Casimira!
One thing that has always annoyed me on the anyport personal settings is that the "Save Account Settings" button on the Personal page of Edit Profile is just the teensiest bit below the "Delete Account" button.

I don't know how that works. My posts are still here, nothing seems to be missing link wise save my own "missing links" brain wise... I was only able to go online once in the 2 weeks I was in NY. I went to the local library and my time was limited as there were people waiting to use the computers. It was not leisurely in any way so I only posted a couple of things. I never go there in August unless I have to as it is so crowded and the people there are rich and rude, bona fide riff raff. I only went because it was a free ticket and I needed to get away. I was alone in the house I was conceived and born in and was able to do some constructive things in the house that really needed doing. (cleaning the cellar and attic and some landscape work). I often feel guilty because my brother does most if not all of the overall management of the property but these chores were sorely in need of doing and it felt good to be of some use. All in all, I was able to avoid the riff raff best I could and had a restorative and restful respite with some lovely visits with old friends and family although, most everyone was working as it is a very busy time for most of the people I know. This is the "high season" where people make a lot of money and can't afford to take any time off. I was quite content being alone and having no major commitments to anyone or thing.

Really, that does sound like a lovely get-away, Casimira.
What Kimby was referring to was that now, if someone wanted to look up something that he/she knew was in a thread by Casimira, the search engine would not render results to a Search referencing Casimira as the thread maker.
Since the Search function here pretty much sucks, though, I suggest first trying google to look for stuff on anyport. Put in some key words + anyportinastorm.proboards and you are very likely to find what you want.

Personally, I don't mind going on searches for old threads because it's kind of like going on an adventure (or, up into the attic as I did at my homestead or the cellar as well) and I usually come across an unexpected thread from a long time ago and many times use it as an opportunity to revive a topic that newer members may or may not be able to contribute to.
There really is a treasure trove of "stuff' on this board that a lot of people overlook that merit revitalization.

There really is a treasure trove of "stuff' on this board that a lot of people overlook that merit revitalization. Yes! You are so right. I find, too, that I get inspired to interact more after reading way back in some of the threads & seeing how much yakking used to go on here. It's a forum, so a platform for endless online discussion. We really don't want to lose that just because it's so easy to post a smiley or nothing. I am worried that phone use is going to kill online forums, as photos cannot be seen in all their glory, thumb-typing doesn't lend itself to flights of discourse, and apparently it's too tedious for phone users to scroll back up a thread and check on what went before. I love that you think to revitalize or at least reintroduce interesting older topics. I don't remember to do that nearly as often as I should.

Sorry to read about your family troubles Mich and Cheery, my MIL ( I still call that even though I'm not married to her son) is now nearly 91 and finally becoming frail and forgetful, I wish she would agree to move here but I guess that's never going to happen now. Her waste of skin son is in Holland and planning to move even further away and she has no other family. Fortunately she has fantastic neighbours. Sounds a perfect break Casimira. Completely agree re the treasure trove Im re reading the SA threads for info at the moment and they are some good, better than any book I can buy. (Off to South Africa in couple weeks which I am very excited about.) Yes finally not working so much just 2 days one week and 3 the next so have really been spending lots of time sorting out jobs at home that I should have done decades ago, such as had the bottom half garden completely stripped as it was an overgrown mess and so now planning what should go there but has to be low/ no maintenance. What else .... raising money for Brooke which is an equine charity doing something called #Myhackathon which is essentially ride horse for a 100 miles in 100 days and raise a 100 pounds , I had great fun doing that and also have taken my horse camping in Wales for a couple of days. Now that does not look like much written down

Wow ~ it does so look like a bunch written down!
That is really a shame about your (former) mother-in-law. The change in my mother after moving to assisted living has been nothing short of miraculous -- not to a nursing home, mind you, simply to apartment living tailored for the very elderly. Is there no one who might be able to reach out to her son & get him to come back long enough to get his mother squared away in a place that would enhance her quality of life?
The garden project sounds exciting but big. Are you going to hold off on planting until you get back from South Africa? Seeing the drought-tolerant and native succulents there might really inspire you.
Riding for charity and going camping with your horse? I'd say you know how to stave off boredom!

Our son's neighbour across the hall in Edinburgh was a Scot in his mid-50s who has been living in the States for 20 years, has a family there. Two years ago he came to Edinburgh to help out his aged mother who was having some health problems. He is still in Edinburgh!
