They did have a store there & I also bought seeds from it! You could buy seeds for herbs which were pretty obscure in the US at that time, such as rue. 1001-1005-1007 Decatur Street--old firms dealing in furs and pelts, old printing shop and restaurant built about 125 years ago / The Roma Restaurant, French Market Bakery, and Reuter Seed Store are visible in the photograph as is a sign reading "Regal Keg Beer, Frozen Glasses, Direct Draw" sourceReuter's building, which is purportedly haunted, was build @1875 & became the seed company's headquarters in 1916. sourceIf you go here and search (Ctrl + F) "reuter", you'll see where to purchase green beans originally offered by Reuter's. How cool is that?!!??
That's when there were actually real people who lived in the Quarter and had thriving businesses to meet their every day needs. What a shame all that is gone. I remember when I first came to New Orleans to attend Loyola in 1972 and I really, really wanted to live in the Quarter. I even scoped out an apartment in the 1000 block of Royal Street and my first friends were two women that were a couple and they took me all over the Quarter. Had I lived there it's very likely I never would have made it to classes all the way Uptown.
Somewhere in my stuff I have a teensy booklet that I am sure I got at that Reuter's that give instructions for how to plant and grow sweet peas. (as you know, we plant them in the autumn here but, with all the climactic chaos over the years it's a roll of the dice as to whether or not they will grow like they're "supposed" to.) T.'s father was a avid gardener and he remembers some years when they had bouquets of sweet peas on the Christmas table!!!
Thanks (I guess...) for that trip down memory lane.
I would love to hear your mother's "take" on her memories of those days

Just musing here...whenever I see old buildings, scenes, even rooms that I have known in my youth, they always seem smaller than I remember them. Not just childhood memories where I would have been smaller physically compared to the surroundings, but adult memories as well.
One exception was the hospital where I spent 4 years training...I knew every inch of that building, it was my home. Forty plus years later I visited it and my first reaction on seeing it was "Hell, it's so big!"
As Prof. Julius Sumner Miller would say, "Why is it so?"

I always try to be extra careful in the kitchen, but I definitely added a bit of my own blood to the salad I was making.

I jabbed myself in the thumb with the point of the bread knife while slicing a loaf. With only two hands, you'd think I'd know where both of them are at any given time.

I'd be one of those spiders that falls off the ceiling without attaching a thread first.

Still no word on Mark?
Well, I hope he's basking away in his Spanish paradise. That's where I would be.

I checked on another forum and saw that Mark had briefly posted saying he had been without internet access.
That was on 7/29.
So, I imagine he is as I hope basking in his paradise in Spain.
I sent him a message to try and check in with us when he can.

I interpret that as snarky. (And, oh how you love to bait!)
And, if it isn't, mea culpa.
As if people with families, and yes, spouses included, have other things to do in their life than spend their time on forums...
What an interesting topic that could be. "What posters spouses/partners views are on long time members of forums". I can only think/remember one pair who used to post on here. NYCgirl, and NYCboy. They were delightful. I wonder what ever happened to them. I guess with NYCchild they are preoccupied.

I still can't "wrap my head" around posting on a forum or anything internet related on a phone. It just doesn't seem right.

I still can't "wrap my head" around posting on a forum or anything internet related on a phone. It just doesn't seem right. I do it once in a while. Typing a message in on a phone is annoying as could be, plus of course the limitations of the crapified mobile versions of browsers and operating systems. Phones now are just really crappy little computers.

I will stick to using my trusty "flip phone" which come to find out does have more "bells and whistles" than I thought but don't bother with. I occasionally text and the camera is useful for pics of plants I see that I want to later ID online.
Everyone makes fun of my phone but the salesman at Verizon told me more and more people are reverting back to flip phones.
It's nice and sturdy and fits nicely in my jeans pocket and I don't have to worry about having a scratched screen or worse yet making annoying "butt calls' which happens all the time on my friends smart phones and most especially my husbands phone.
SOOO nerve wracking to get calls with no one on the other end save dead noise or worse, background noises and conversations going on around wherever the caller is.
When I was at JFK airport recently I am guessing that more than 85-90% of the people in the lounges and gates were glued to their "smart phones". It's an ungodly obsession and it alarms me that people have wandered away so far from their immediate surroundings to take notice of what's happening around them. I like to "people watch" and make eye contact with people but there are less and less, fewer people who no longer do so. It's disturbing to me that we've come to "this".

When I am walking along the footpath in our busy shopping streets I have to set up a rhythm and not dodge around, otherwise it is difficult to start off again. I refuse to get out of the way with people who are looking at phones and not where they are going. I have learned to just angle my shoulder so they bump into the leading shoulder and bony elbow. Of course they apologize but I say I'm OK but they really must watch out for little old ladies.
My small contribution to the overthrow of phone zombies.

Good one Mossie!!!!!
Questa, I do something similar and it's especially effective when I am walking with my dog.
If I could only train him to make a menacing growling sound to accompany me as they aim toward me/us.
I also get real annoyed at those who are wearing headphones and chatting away.
Sometimes it's someone I know and I go to greet them only to find out they can't hear me.
Years ago I would always greet my postal carrier and oft times have a pleasant exchange. Nowadays they almost all are wearing headsets and are chatting away with someone. (I'm almost certain that there must be regulation prohibiting this but if there is it certainly isn't being enforced).

The problem is my computer is in my little office which is on the other side of the garden. And how big is your garden, Vita? Ha ha, Questa ~ I admit to the same kind of passive-aggressive urban protest. I want to know who made the rule which states that, when receiving or sending a text message, one should stop dead in the exact middle of the sidewalk. Since ones body is often not large enough to sufficiently block the sidewalk, be sure to adopt a wide legged stance and keep those elbows well out. Casimira, can't you dab a little milk foam or whipped cream on his muzzle before setting out for the walk?

Smart phones absolutely ARE addicting and annoying and contributing to a decline in society in the 21st century. But this is BECAUSE of their utility and portability and wirelessness and convenience. AND for how they keep us connected to our loved ones and our e-friends. If I didn’t have my iPhone, I wouldn’t be on Any Port at all, now that retired hubby has taken over the PC most of the time.

Also iPhones allow multi-tasking. We can use them in the TV room while watching the Sunday talking heads news shows, while eating breakfast, while waiting on line to check out groceries, while following a kitty around to keep her out of trouble with cars and curs.
