Oh, you'll probably get your turn sooner or later! ;D People here have their moments. I am of course one of the rare angels. But one thing, Myrt, is that this board gives a different meaning for being "well-travelled." It is not at all a question of going around the world and seeing things. If you can just go to the other side of town and make a report about what you saw (with photos even better!), that can be real travel and a source of wonderment to everybody. One thing that everybody needs to remember is that our own local things are completely exotic to a lot of other people. That's one of the reasons that things like the "British Food" thread, even though it was started as a joke (did I do that? I don't even remember) became so fascinating. Last year, I just walked down one of the streets and took photos in the windows of the food shops and everybody went "ooh" and "ahh" as though it were extraordinary -- and it was, to some of the other people!

I take your point, Kerouac2, and appreciate the kindness behind it! I guess I'm referring to my own failure to travel which I longed to do years ago...but circumstances prevented it and these days life is pretty hard for the peasantry! I live 20/30 minutes drive from any town of any size....surrounded by trees and fields I am......although the villages close by are very pretty but nothing out of the ordinary.. it's fine though - a rare visit to the county town is exotic for me! ;D I will stun you all by posting pictures of cows, sheep and unfeasibly large tractors..... Btw, I dooo like the phrase 'rare angel' - sounds like a story is in there somewhere....

Living away from town is not a problem at all. This summer I spent about an hour in my (dead) grandparents' village and made a report about it. It was a bigger success than a lot of the reports I have made about Paris: My ancestral village. (Oh, please click on the link. I just read through the whole report again myself and was delighted to see the photos of field flowers and vegetation at the end. They are worth all of the boring stuff that goes before.)

Cheery and Myrt, as soon as you all hit this board, your wit, keen observations, and eye for beauty, plus your abilities in capturing all that with a camera, were all obvious and gratefully received.
Myrt, it's gratifying that you find the forum "sophisticated" and your fellow forumites "well travelled", but that comes from looking at the place as a whole. We're all putting up our bits and pieces, and we all find our own lives hum-drum at times. But, as Kerouac said, our mundane stuff can be really exotic to someone else.
My favorite thing about anyport is that we get to share what interests us and get friendly feedback, plus are given windows into other people's worlds and what they see and do. There ain't no aristocracy here!

Here's some mindless chatter... tomorrow is Independence Day and the office will be closed. And next week is the Water Festival, 20th- 22nd, also not working.

Well, that won't stop you from going to the office anyway to use the internet, will it? ;D

Yeah, right...
Actually internet prices are really coming down now and you can get reasonably fast access for around 100USD, unlimited. But I'm still waiting for prices like in Hanoi, my brother has a 1mb, unlimited download line for 25USD. That's close to or equal to prices in Europe. Here everybody's worried about ISPs going bankrupt because of competition, can you believe that?

One hundred US dollars a month??! Surely not! I am paying 389 pesos monthly for phone & broadband (1mb) combined. That's $31.75 US / 22.59 Euro / 131910.1445 KHR. finance.yahoo.com/currency-converterThat leads me to a question: My previous service separated phone and internet, and I opted for 1mb internet. I was paying around 100 pesos more then for phone & broadband together. Since I moved, my service is not nearly as good. The thing is, when you get broadband here, you automatically get wireless service included. Where I lived before was very unpopulated. My suspicion is that someone around here is piggy-backing on my service. Is this realistic, and what can I do to stop it?

You have to put a password so only you can access it.
For price comparisons, I pay 30€/month for 2MB, plus phone and lots of TV (most of which I don't watch). With the phone line, I can call for "free" in most places in Europe, N America and lots of other countries.

Yes, when you look at all of the wireless connections in your area, you should see that some are secure and some are non-secure. Normally, private connections are secure with the code you enter the first time you connect. The non-secure ones are often cafés, McDonald's and other such places which may or may not require a password.
(Just clicking on the icon shows me that I am in reach of 13 other wifi possibilities.)

Yes, those prices are ok. More along the lines of what I'd be willing to pay.
I suspect there's a bit of a cartel here though...

I am spending a while looking at all the bits of the board I've not dipped into yet...and playing with the Modify Profile stuff - particularly the skins - goodness me, some of them are bright! What skins are you all using? Just out of interest you know...... .....and the Port Authority bits are the most informative I've read on an MB...

I use the last skin on the list - "very plain"

I just use the default, but when I am at work it is "very plain" because no images seep through.

I have the very blue harbour one...bit too bright I think! Just tried Ice cream parlour - too much beige for me...........and the Very Plain is really very plain isn't it? I'm sure you're all fascinated by this...sorry! ;D OOooOO - Night Port! Pretty........

I am fascinated by it because I obsess about how color shows up on various computers. This is a picture-intensive forum, and stuff needs to be seen in true color. That is the reason there are two "streamline moderne" skins. It was discovered that the original sometimes showed up bleached-out on some flatscreen computers. Yeah, "here come the tugs" is a loud skin! The background of "ice cream parlor" is yellow. Is that what color you're seeing, Myrt? Some of them are much prettier in use than they are in the little pics in the catalog. I'm using "verdigris" right now and loving the coppery touches. For people afraid of missing something, "retro bambi" and "motor court" both have very big icons to show what's new. Great to hear that the info stuff is useful. The hope is that it will be clear to everyone.

I am very interested in colour and people's perception of it too, Bixa, being art trained(several centuries ago). The Ice cream parlour skin is shades of sludgy yellows and creams for me - for which the term 'beige' is code for 'not very appealing'! Sorry all you beige lovers.....it's just personal taste. I prefer my creams and yellows cleaner and purer in tone. Although contrarily, I love the 'Night Port' sludgy tones of greens and blues - jade and all associate shades are amongst my favourite colours and those I choose for clothes, house decor etc. And actually I think the skins colours chosen are also affected by one's mood, the time of day and the amount of light in one's home - I was playing with them in the late evening, with only a single desk light on in the room after a long stressful day.....interesting subject.

Little by little the old skins are being upgraded to get rid of the solid bar of color across the top. Here Come the Tugs got the treatment. It's still bright, but looks much nicer now.
Do you still engage in any artistic endeavors, if you don't mind my asking. Dumb question, really, since you garden, a true art form, plus I suspect your house is wonderfully done.

Ah, if only that were true......my beautiful Barn could be gorgeous but is actually just full of junk and tat.....severe financial shortages, age and work have stopped me doing anything interesting for years.. I did used to try and keep a stock of arty things (for my spare time - ha!) but my beloved daughters always seemed to need paint, brushes, paper, canvas etc etc...... And my garden is dedicated to wildlife and wild plants with occasional patches of vegetables and cultivated flowers plus chickens, goats, a horse and children playing - not much of an art form really - more a living and moving canvas! ;D

something random: it seems i am back together with my ex boyfriend. Went back to the first page of this thread to see what it was originally about (random posts) and found this one from February 2009. Is the "ex boyfriend" the present Mr. Rikita?

Just thought I'd revive this thread as it's such a good place for comments that might evolve into discussion.
I have time on my hands since I got hit with a sore throat and cough yesterday, completely out of the blue.
Poor me.
