China has begun to lose population. The population went down 1,270,000 last year.

To lose half of Slovenia sounds rather careless. To lose one may be regarded as a misfortune

I just learned that Roger Tory Peterson painted many of the plates for his Field Guide to Mexican Birds at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater as an appointed Scholar in Residence of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.
This tidbit delights me on several levels, and seems entirely fitting.

Oh dear, Questa -- I can't remember where I got it! Way back on ttr (Thorn Tree Refuge) I was a goldfish, simply because I love goldfish. So, looking for a change, I googled up some carp & found that one. Also added some Forum Avatars if anyone else is tired of his/her avatar or doesn't have one yet. (Go to your Profile, click "edit Profile". You'll have two choices, your uploaded one on top and "Use a Forum Avatar" underneath. If you click on that, a window will open showing all the forum avatars. If you look through them and don't see anything you want, just click on the top (uploaded) option again.

I most certainly didn't have a psychotic episode the first time I was in central Florence, but it was like walking about in a Renaissance painting, or live tableau.

A couple of Jehovah witnesses; both white men, of a certain age, have returned to my house more than once trying to convert me - or rather, just "talk about God", though I told them I wasn't interested and told them to leave me alone. Both times, I had just walked out the door and down the outdoor staircase. Hydro-Québec is automatised now, and the post almost never rings. I don't usually answer the door unless awaiting someone I know, and so many people have portable phones now.
I could just tell them to feck off and die, but I'm not usually that rude.
The crew clearing the snow off my street woke me up before 5 a.m. I have no urgent work so I'll go back to bed for a bit, with the radio on softly, as I turn the heat up a tad.

Today I was rummging around in the garage (Jeff's man-cave)looking for small pieces of wood to practice making a mosaic on....when we got talking about coloured glass.... So I've had my first lesson in glass and tile cutting I've been set up with a diamond glass cutter (the thing has to be held in a special way that just doesn't feel natural...but Jeff IS a Master craftsman so I'm being taught by the best)....I have special gloves, goggles and sets of 'nibblers' and pliers. New skills

I just learned another reason for putting a blanket in a horse (besides keeping them warm in winter and keeping flies off in summer). “Blankets are sometimes used to keep the horse's hair short. If horses are blanketed at the beginning of the autumn, especially if kept in a lighted area for 16 hours a day, they will not grow a winter coat. Blankets also protect horses that are kept with a short clipped hair coat for show purposes. When a horse is given a full body clip, or even a partial "trace clip", it needs to have a blanket kept on at all times if the weather is cool because the horse no longer has the natural insulation of a longer hair coat. If a blanket is put on a horse at the beginning of the winter in order to suppress the growth of a winter coat, or if the horse is kept clipped in cold weather, the blanket cannot be taken off until warmer weather arrives in the spring. If a horse is subjected to cold weather without either a blanket or a natural hair coat to keep it warm, it may become ill, and vulnerable to sicknesses such as influenza.”

Does the SPCA know? Have the horses been consulted?

I'm sure the various SPAs and humane societies know, as mistreatment of horses was a very important humanitarian (or equitarian?) cause from the Victorian era.

Dr. Hans Asperger was a Nazi and his goal in diagnosing children with the condition was not to help them but to euthanize them. And yet he was allowed to operate a paediatric clinic in Vienna until his death in 1980. Knowing that, I think the condition should be renamed.

Good grief! That is horrible. Yes, the condition absolutely should be renamed.
I learned this yesterday, but will stick it here since it's infinitely cheerier than what you learned: Cole Porter was inspired to write the song Night and Day by a Roman-era mosaic in Ravenna, Italy.

I think we forget most of what we learn, only remember what we need or do repetitiously. I have just got onto Windows 10 from 7 and just can't remember how to do the simplest thing. Very frustrating and bad for my morale.
