Pronouns are - he/she/him/her/they/them - no problem. But those who want to be called xe, xir, xirs, fae, faer, faers ad infinitum - these are neopronouns. Just found out that's what those are called. I have a question though - would that person object if I only refer to them by name and don't acknowledge the pronouns they want me to use? Would there be any sentence at all where I couldn't insert their name instead of a pronoun? Can't think of one off the top of my head.
Associated question - if someone identifies as a cat or a dog or any animal, like they do, should they not now be able to avail themselves of human rights laws as they don't identify as human? You'd be criticised I'm sure if you didn't respect their choice. Only animal rights laws would apply and as such they are deemed to be property, not a person? So the laws of the land, such as murder, if I killed one it'd be criminal damage/destruction of property. I'd like to see a debate on that involving the non-binary community.

I realised today my dishwasher has a setting that takes three and a half hours. Why on earth would I need that?

Because this setting uses less water and less energy.

Could be, though three and a half hours economically compared to half an hour I normally use even for quite dirty stuff I'd have thought would use still a lot more. Could be it uses less than a normal hour or so wash.

Got me thinking about that concerning wanting to use the most economical setting. Never gave it much though when I started with it. Just put it on the shortest setting thinking that would be it. In typical German fashion it was easy enough to find the specifications for mine and the longer setting does use less power and water per minute or per anything and uses a lower temperature (50 degrees as opposed to 60 degrees) than my normal 30 minute wash. Overall though the power consumption is higher per cycle (1.2kWh compared to 0.8kWh) and water also (12 litres compared to 8 litres). It does use then just half as much more water and power for one cycle but for six times as long as the short one.
No matter anyway as I couldn't be bothered to wait over three hours and hearing it going in the background for that length of time as well.

Sometimes I try to remember to start a wash after 23:00 (when the price of electricity goes down until 07:00) when I am going to bed, but then there is the problem of forgetting to empty the machine when I wake up, not to mention it not being a very appealing occupation just as one gets out of bed.

My Korean-made US washing machine takes about 35 minutes to do its thing; my Italian washing machine takes over two hours to do the same thing.

Thank you for saying that.
When I saw Kerouac's post earlier, I started to suggest that he could put the clothes in before 11, as maybe the machine uses little electricity when it's filling. Then the cycle might be done around 11:30 or so -- not too late to get the clothes out and go to bed. Then I remembered what countries might have made his washing machine.
I've been sitting on my hands to keep from typing a rant about British and European washers. What the living hell are they thinking when they design those things?

Both my dishwasher and clothes washer are German and have a thirty minute option. Though I presume nowadays they are not truly German.

My washing machine is a Thomson, French company but probably manufactured in some other EU country. It has an A+++ energy rating, which is the best. It does have a 30 minute and a 45 minute quick wash setting, but I only use one of those when I have very little to wash or am putting something that I just bought in the machine, as they recommend to do before wearing new clothes.

Though I presume nowadays they are not truly German. Even Miele is half-owned by the Chinese now.

I just looked up my machine, and the washing machine division of Thomson was sold to the Italian company El.Fi which later sold it to the Israeli company Elco which sold it to the Spanish company Fagor in the Fagor-Brandt group. Then they declared bankruptcy, and then it started to get complicated. The holding company is now officially Technicolor, but my washing machine was almost certainly built in China.

My dishwasher, washing machine and dryer all seem to take about an hour. When in Florida I was shocked that the dishwasher took almost 3 hours!
Our hydro reduced rates start at 7:00 p.m. but also all day/night on Saturday and Sunday.

In France the reduced electricty rates are from 22:00 to 06:00 except Paris which is 23:00 to 07:00 because we Parisians are decadent layabouts..

I can't comment on your being decadent layabouts in Paris, but in fact reduced electricity rates vary all over the place. Near Bordeaux, they are from 13:00 to 15:00 and again at night. In Bayonne, only 35 km from here, they are different than here where we live (although I don't remember offhand what they are) where they are 12:30 to 14:30 and again from 1 am to 7am.

It's also true that there are a lot of different electricity companies now so there are sure to be all sorts of variations. I have stayed with EDF, the national supplier (which also controls all of southern England).

We stayed with EDF too, despite various companies trying to convince us to change.

I read again of someone winning an absolute fortune on the EuroMillions lottery. Thought I'd have a go on that just for fun. However - "EuroMillions is not available in Germany...." I didn't expect that.

That would hurt.

Something I learned today, from my friend Clem.
'A year and a day....''...… the Celtic calendar had 13 months, each of which had 28 days--which left a day remaining---IT'S TODAY !! 23rd December --so make it memorable everybody.
