Is it truly safe to dye fabric in the washing machine? I always have this fear and trepidation about it. Has to do with fear of the dye lingering somewhere in the bowels of the machine and ruining my next laundry load. Irrational fear material? Any other hints or suggestions most welcome. It's 4 white cotton panels (to be a tablecloth eventually if I succeed in my creative endeavor). Thanks.

I haven't dyed anything in years, but I remember that the amount of rinsing that has to be done should take care of any problem of residual dye. Also, you could always run a load of work clothes or something as the next load after dying, just to make sure. I googled dyeing in the washing machine and got tons of hits. This was the first hit and there were several that seemed equally complete.

When I saw the title of this post I thought it might be about dyeing baby chicks. Probably not recommended as a washing machine job.
