Terrific Kerouac! The horsemen are my pick - They must have looked great 'trotting' through the streets ;D The colours, the colours!!! Just gorgeous.

Clapping my hands here with delight & in applause for your wonderful pictures!
Looks as though it was a cold gray day, but you captured the saturated pageantry colors and the joy of the viewers and participants.
I totally love the two pics of the kids in their mandarin hats with the attached queues, but all the photos are superior.
Kudos for the perfect one to end the report!

Did I say anything about the report being finished? Whoops! Didn't want to be greedy. Wow -- the report got even better! Love the Big Heads. The 2nd & the last photos in #37 are super dooper!

More wonderful photos Kerouac I love the fact that people of all colours and creeds join in and take to the streets in a wonderful display of joy! Thank you so much for more Chinese New Year ! You said "The dragons and lions all live beneath Chinatown". Well before I read that information I had taken a walk with Pages Jaunes from the corner of Ave d'Ivry and Jardin Baudricourt, where the Patisserie Saisons is located, up to Rue du Disque( which seems to run in a curve back to Ave d'Ivry). Here the maps shows an entrance into an underground warren of shops and - quite spooky just with the dim lighting - Could this be the storage vaults?

Okay, I confess that my eyes had been excessively dazzled and I was ready to leave. The crowds were getting bigger and bigger. And yes, it was pretty cold. I walked up the middle of rue de Tolbiac to the metro. I noticed the underground rue du Javelot and promised myself to take a better look at underground Chinatown soon.

I really enjoyed revisiting this thread. It's nice to see people of all ages and ethnicities enjoying themselves together.
I wish I could've seen the parade in NYC this year, but I was away. Oh well, next time. I think I'll do what you did and check out the pre-game, because massive crowds do start to get to me after awhile.

It would be great to see the New York version. We just need to find a way to convince the Chinese to move their new year to a warmer part of the year.

This year two of the three parades were cancelled for security reasons, a decision taken even before the incident at the Carrousel du Louvre. But the big parade in the 13th arrondissement was still on. It always takes place about a week after the official new year's date. I'm sure there is a reason for that, but I don't know what it is. I suspect that it might have something to do with the businesses all being open. This is the one day of the year when a lot of people who never set food in Chinatown come to visit, and they also spend money. Many of the shops would have been closed last weekend, but not on February 5th. The weather cooperated. After two and a half days of rain, the skies began to clear just before the beginning of the parade.

What a pathetic-looking rooster.
That police officer was watching you. Glad he realized you weren't a trouble maker.
I happen to be on my desktop computer, for a change, and your photos look great. Lots of nice colors!

Gosh, you took some killer pictures! I'm really happy to see this thread updated, indeed any thread on a traditional event. I could have sworn you'd covered this several times, but no. Kudos for going out in the cold to cover the event. Do you suppose it took so long to get going because of all the security?

Actually, there are other Chinese New Year threads somewhere or other, maybe in Postcards.
