Yes, I agree about it being plain. Most of the Church's I have been into here have little in adornments or statues. I heard that they want to take away almost everything besides the stained glass, the Cross and statues of The Virgin Mary. We rarely see anything in gold here. This picture shows the sanctuary.

One thing that always amazed me about Florida is how the different parts of it can be so different. Sure, I know other states have variety, but Florida is so skinny!
Are you a fan of Cuban food, Heather?

We have been to Cholula only once, in January, 1994. We visited Puebla for a few days about 3 years ago, en route to Oaxaca. Puebla is fantastic. So's the food.
I enjoyed the mercado in Cholula, where, among other foods, I ate Sopa de Médula.
The Pyramid was imposing but I was disappointed by the tunnels underneath.

The Market here is great! I love all the different varieties they have to offer here. Celery soup is very popular here as well, I have never tried it yet as there is so many different things to eat here it will take a while before i have tried everything. I have to say the Carnitas are great here There is a place right up the road from me and i can smell them cooking from the down wind makes me hungry all day long I love the Quasadilla's here go huge i can hardly eat just 1 loaded with squash flowers chicharon loads of queso and chile. I prefer the blue masa when i have mine as it has a better flavor. They serve a sandwich called a pambazos . I have ate it only once as it made me so sick i was in bed with a fever of 104 for 3 days. My body has not gotten used to all the wonderful spices here as of yet lol Its like a torta but not made with manteca its what we call a water bread. Its topped with four and is very soft in texture. It looks almost like a sandwich i saw in one of your posts from last year i dont recall the name but you said it resembled a pulled pork sandwich with slaw and topped with a red sauce. Here they put Longaniza (spicy like sausage) in it which is what made me sick (i cant eat chorizo either) here they put the longaniza in a red sauce that is so yummy and in the sandwich they put any kind of meat and lettuce, Avocado, onions and such and then soak the sandwich in the sauce, the bread is so soft it just soaks up all the juices and makes a great sandwich. I have to say tho i loved the flavor just my tubby didnt like it. here is a pic of a pambazos that i got from the net as i was not taking pics that day. picture used from nuestrogourmet

lol Bixa! I dont like it as much as i do my Torta made with manteca tho. But is a great pan in itself. My husband likes pan de agua just dipped in cafe or leche. Matter a fact 1/2 the country will eat any kind of bread dipped in some kind of liquid hehe that was the one thing i had to get used to soggy bread . I mean bread pudding i can handle but soggy bread i had never eaten in the U.S. before now.

I have to say tho i loved the flavor just my tubby didnt like it. <snip> Longaniza can be strong stuff. I got some longaniza verde from or favorite carnicería in Pátzcuaro. It was delicious, but it made my wife's stomach very upset, not because of germs, but because of the strong spices in it. Now put that in a bolillo with the other ingredients you mention, dip the whole in chile sauce, and fry it! "Pambazo" means "belly bomb" in Spanish. Robles, the picture that I posted sometime ago was of a homemade Torta Ahogada, in some ways similar to pambazo, but thankfully, not fried. It's sliced or shredded roast pork (some say carnitas, and I suppose it could be, but it's more like roast pork, in my experience.) The whole sandwich is drowned (ahogada) in a thin chile and tomato broth, and topped with shredded cabbage and onion shreds. By the way, I have never thought of celery soup as a Mexican specialty. Is it clear or is it creamy?

That's a new one on me. I'd love to have a recipe if you can oblige. Look ~~ threads await you! Soup, Glorious Soup, for one, and there's also Requested Recipes. I've always like to dunk, but I don't like having to dunk. Pan de yema, the celebrated celebratory bread of Oaxaca, can be dry as dust. I've had it fresh out of the oven & it was great, but it's not a bread that holds up to setting around. If you mention its dryness, people tell you to eat it dunked in coffee or chocolate. I guess that's better than having to throw it out.

yea depending on what kind of bread it is instead of throwing it out i just make bread crumbs out of it, i have notices that most of the bread here is dry. i will go to my bakery 3 doors down and wait till its right out of the oven steaming hot and fresh and eat it that way im not fond of the dunk thing lol Now Tres leches that is another story and its not really considered dunked but more soaked and that is the best cake i have ever had and made! Its quit easy to make if anyone would like the recipe let me know. The whole process is time consuming but well worth the wait.

lol Ker to be honest i have lost about a total of 60 lbs since i have been here in mexico and that has been less than 6 months lol But with that said you will not go 1 place here in my town and someone is not stuffing there face with some sort of food either it be taco arabec, carnitas, chalupas, pastrys some sweet confection ect. lol. There is one thing to be said that is true no matter what, no matter how broke one might be there is always a fiesta going on the people here are always happy and of course always eating.

Magnificent, FUN pictures, Heather!!
I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't even know that Cholula had a carnival.
Are the bearded, turbaned figures part of some kind of moros y cristianos theme? What about the guy in the extravagant headdress standing next to you -- a traditional dancer of some sort?
That little guy with the Guadalupe on his chest is adorable and the charro girls so pretty. Your son is extremely handsome!
You really take super pictures!

Really?! The turbans are a confusing touch. Who cares -- it's all colorful and looks like wonderful fun. Is carnival only celebrated on the Tuesday, or does it go on for several days?
ha ha -- I just noticed in the 2nd picture that the brave Aztec warrior is carrying something that looks like a woman's purse.

Hi Bixa no its celebrated several days and not just in our town here in my little town but other parts of Puebla as well and the one i went to was not violent no one got hurt this year but in huejotzingo they are more realistic. As in they don't just shoot in the air they actually shoot the guns at each other there are no bullets its loaded with gun powder tho and in this clip someone actually died. This was from last year. you can look up carnival de cholula on youtube.com and can see from all the towns here in Puebla how they celebrate this day And yes he was carrying a purse lol his wife is the women that is dancing in the third picture. She is pregnant was was in alot of pain after all the jumping around and stuff she did for 3 hours straight.
