With the Olympic countdown having already begun, Great Britain has started a quite nice advertising campaign on the continent. This caused me to realise that Great Britain has very few tourism campaigns here, unlike Ireland.
Here is an example of one of their spots:

Well, I was quite happy to see Dev Patel in there.

In shorter bursts, those You're Invited spots have been on the BBC news website for ages. I recognized Judi Dench and, because Mark made me look out for him, Jamie Oliver. Who are the others?

Dev Patel was the (British) star of Slumdog Millionaire.

The other blonde is Twiggy.
I believe he has quite a high international profile.

The other blonde is Twiggy. Ah, I was wondering why they would dredge up an image of Carnaby Street, which I'm pretty sure is totally uknown to foreigners under the age of 50. That would betray the age of the advertisers -- or else maybe it shows the demographics they are aiming at. "Come to Great Britain and feel young again while you spend a big share of your comfortable income."

It might be as you think, kerouac - but that area is back again as a centre for alternative-y styles and new designers, and always seems pretty packed to me on the rare occasions I pass through.
On the other hand, in the "flailing around to see what attracts foreigners" stakes, you have perhaps yet to see who the BBC has picked to represent us in the Eurovision Song Contest this year..........

No, that has already been revealed to us on our annual Eurovision thread elsewhere.

The Franklin Roosevelt metro station has been totally relooked top to bottom for this Great Britain campaign and considering the effort that went into it, I would think that it will be up for a few months at least. The next station on the line -- George V -- would have made more sense symbolically, but it is the Franklin Roosevelt station that has been totally equipped with plasma screens for advertising needs.
