Say if you cannot access the image: fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/547974_10150805031867970_563952969_9467754_934603000_n.jpgA friend of mine is desesperate to find out where this is. To me, it screams Italian Renaissance. So i got in on the wrong foot by thinking of the steps of Museo Correr. But they are neoclassical. Briefly wondered if they could have been on the other side of it - libreria sansoviniana. But Venice isn't really Renaissance - if memory serves well. The obvious would be Firenze/Florence. The columns don't match those of the uffizi as far as I can see. it is a massive place! So my brain thought of Vatican City. I looked "Italian renaissance staircase" up but couldn't see it. Now I just hope it isn't a tacky recreation at Las Vegas... but the blues are too subtle for it I think. HELP! I now NEED to find out where it is.

I knew for several reasons. Firstly where it is located, Würzburg, wasn't too far from where I lived near Frankfurt. It was a place I had to visit when I did my Ph.D in Psychology to complete a paper on "How Classical Art Influences the State of Mind: Calming or Agitating Effect?"
Also it was necessary to kill two birds with one stone as I was also involved in a paper for my Architecture Degree due to - "The staircase spans its vault, an area of 18 × 30 meters, without pillars. Beneath an unsupported trough vault, a masterpiece of construction with a maximum height of 23 meters which spans an area of 18 × 30 meters." My paper dealt with "Staircase construction techniques from 1700 - 1800", which was the main era of grand formal staircases being built throughout the houses of Europe.
Lastly, my thesis for my History degree focussed on Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte who connected with the place by staying there three times between 1806 and 1813. It was titled "Napoléon: Brilliant mind or bully with short arse syndrome (aggressive overcompensation for being small)" The title was changed slightly to pass the examiners, I admit.
Lesser mortals could easily have come to my inspired answer though by doing a Google Image Search. I would never stoop so low.

aaaaahhhh! I learn every day. Gracias, Bixa!
Mark... I did try to google it. It didn't work for me.
It is a rather grand staircase in a rather large building. Obviously the Bishop-Prince wanted to show people how good it is to be Bishop-Prince.

Three degrees that I'm admitting to at the moment. Annie, click on this link - images.google.com/In the search box you see a little icon of a camera. Click on that and a new search box opens. In that box cut and paste the url of the image posted (or you can upload an image). Click 'Search' and the wonders of Google will try and match the image up with one it knows, and then post the results. Try it with any image and it will try and match it up with the original elsewhere on a different web page or another as best as it can. You need though to get the url of the image, not the url of the page it's posted on. Normally right click on a image and click 'View Image' to get it. Anyway, that's how people without my depths of knowledge pretend to be clever.
