Day 3 of shopping for light fixtures for the lake house. It would be more fun if I didn't hate most of them in my price range, especially bathroom lights.

Prepping for a weekend of painting at the lake cottage.
Mr. Kimby "fired" the painter chosen by the builder because his bid was too high and did not include painting the four exterior doors. (We painted our current house in 4 days by ourselves so he thought we could do the smaller lake cottage no problem.) We have already spent 3 full days painting, and now realize we shouldn't have fired the painter. But by the time we asked him to come back, he'd already found another job. So we are stuck. It will be so cold this weekend that we will have to paint in the basement with a propane heater to warm the air up to a temp that might allow the paint to cure.
I have refrained from berating Mr. Kimby for this fiasco, he's too busy beating himself up. When he realized that we had painted - two coats, even - the WRONG 4x8 sheets of material (the builder was off hunting antelope and we couldn't reach him by cell phone to ask what to paint) Mr. Kimby called the situation a "cluster f**k. I'd have to agree. But off we go tomorrow, to paint some more.

Wow, the moon must be in the house of home and decorating.
I am moving, so my decorating consists of taped up boxes and messiness right now. Taking a break for the moment, as I'm in the process of moving my plants to the new house. It's being fixed up & is not quite ready for my boxes & furniture.
re: light fixtures ~~ can someone explain why light fixtures frequently cost more than ceiling fans, which frequently incorporate lighting fixtures? This has puzzled me for years. It's a good excuse to buy ceiling fans.

I cannot believe how this week has flown by... I am going to spend tomorrow Saturday continuing to do some work around my mother's house, take a break, and go to a bake sale put on by the ladies from the Greek Orthodox Church here, then proceed with my ritual of a long bike ride, walk on the beach, dinner with friends. Sunday,my brother and I are going to NYC for the day and just walk around, have lunch, and enjoy the sites and sounds before heading back to the Island.

too late to tell you about my weekend plans. Dumb question about "the weekend" -- is the Saturday & Sunday combination only common to countries whose populations are or were traditionally Jewish and Christian? I.e., since the two days of celebrating sabbath fall on those days in western calendars, those became the secular days of rest? Mexico only has Saturday after 2 o'clock and Sunday.

well here it is saturday and sunday, at least for schools and office jobs. i would suppose colonialism also played a role in imposing this in big parts of the world. but the shops owned by hindus are open on sundays, or at least some of them.

Today is my last day here in Bridgehampton after 5 weeks plus . At 3a.m. ish tomorrow my husband and I are embarking on a road trip back home to NOLA. The car is packed, keys,a few deviled egg trays and numerous too many to mention items I tried and tried to pare down to a minimum but,not very successfully. After a hellish night's sleep we are going to go visit the cemetary so that my husband can say goodbye to my mother, and then on to another cemetary to bid farewell to a dear friend who passed away while I was here. It's all like a very bad David Lynch movie it seems. Then, lunch with dear friends, dinner with my brother,a final sweep of the house and out the door. I will add that my husband and I don't travel well on the road together for a variety of reasons. Our last road trip was in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina. So,if you don't hear from me please alert the proper authorities. Our plan is to be back in NOLA sometime this upcoming Monday,12/6.

I spent Friday afternoon visiting my friend in the hospital as she was about to be released 8 days after "dying".
It seems a miracle that her husband was able to resuscitate her after finding her not breathing and without a pulse after aspirating and choking in bed on Thanksgiving morning.
Her only apparent ill effect from the episode was a decrease in her hearing. On the upside, she seems much happier to be alive than she was before "dying".

A very lucky lady then - I suppose it does tend to concentrate the mind - being dead.. I hope she continues to feel happier, Kimby I grew up with the notion that Sunday was Church Day and the so called Day of Rest..but these days it's all turned into just another day. Which is a shame. It was always seen as a Special Day in my childhood. I am not at all religious but it's a sad thing that the 24/7 availability of just about everything has made Sunday more of a shopping day than anything else...... Mind you, I seem to spend both Saturday and Sunday just catching up with housework, laundry and every other mundane task I don't have time for in the week - that really is a shame!

Lots of activity here this weekend. Will be catching up with friends after being gone for a few weeks. A big party tomorrow night to celebrate a dear friend getting married. Our favorite band is playing at the local saloon both nights, tonight and Saturday night. We will definitely be going out dancing one or both nights!! Lots and lots of garden work to catch up on. Lemons to be picked and shipped out to worthy souls.

Baking beer biscuits this morning to take to the home of the friend who "died" on Thanksgiving morning. She is hosting a Christmas Eve dinner for friends, despite the forebodings of her husband who had to rescuscitate her the day she last tried to host such a party!

Tonight a gathering with the in-laws,some good food always, as there are several fishermen in the family and some wonderful passed down recipes. Tomorrow will be very low keyed, gardening. The flowers don't know that it is Christmas, thank goodness. A nice long bike ride hopefully, in there somewhere. We're not big Christmas people. Everyone gets lemons or limes from the garden,I made a huge batch of lemon curd, and all the children I give books. I am cat and dog sitting for four different households and all left me lots of goodies, and eggs. Got to fill up the deviled egg trays!!!

Good. I don't have to be nice to you now, in the shabby hope you'd fling some my way. I finished making the two orange chocolate truffle cheesecakes. Let's hope the damned things set correctly. Once I clean up the mess I made doing that, I'll tackle the vanilla pudding ( ) I'm also making. (it's for an invalid)

Friday, my husband and I will be hosting a New Year's Eve Celebration. My husband's second cousin decided this.... He called yesterday to say his mother, my husband's first cousin, is coming up from St. Catharines if we have a party. How could I say no, she is such a sweet lovely woman, we love seeing her.
Cousin Joe tells me he will call me on Wednesday to discuss the menu....
I will continue when he tells me what else I will be doing. Cheers! Mich

Buy two cans of Vienna sausages.

Post by mich64 on Dec 28, 2010 18:41:20 GMT
I doubt I could find cans of vienna sausage here, maybe some piggies in a blanket though. I am hoping his idea of food will be more of the appetizer and not a sit down meal, I am a little tired this week and that might be too much to contemplate considering there will be 14 - 20 people attending. I am thinking a cheese and meat platter, maybe some type of warmed brie and berries, some wonton wraps with minced pork, shrimp and some fresh chopped vegetables. I guess that is a start. One of my dearest friends has just invited me to join her with the children for lunch at her Restaurant tomorrow, so maybe she can help me with some ideas for something quick to prepare. Oh, and I will have to pick up some champagne for some Kir Royal. I will have a busy time just getting to Friday afternoon! Cheers! Mich
