Having been lit in Greece the Olympic Flame began a 70-day Olympic Torch Relay across the Uk on the 18/5/12 www.london2012.com/torch-relay/about/Last week it passed through my neck of the woods and I knew a few of the torch bearers . Unfortunately I could not see it myself due to work committments but here are a few photos - the first are taken from the web and show the flame as it passed through my home village, where one of the torch bearers was an old school friend of my son ( Click on the flickr link for more ) The_Olympic_Torch_2012_0524(078) (Custom) by iveanidea, on Flickr I have never previously thought that the English are a patriotic nation, rarely do we have flags in our gardens etc , however it seems that the Olympics and the Jubilee are making many of us all more patriotic. I lent a camera to my young niece who took these for me as the torch passed her school as it entered Hereford city

Aw, this is GREAT, Lugg! You can really feel the excitement & town spirit as the torch passes. Love the map of the UK on the back of the bus. A sign of modern times -- in the pic just below the one of the bus, I thought the 2nd spectator on the left was raising a glass in tribute to the torch bearer. Then I realized that he, along with almost everyone else, was taking a picture. Speaking of which, it was so generous of you to lend your camera to your niece & to share the fun here. That photo of the flag is wonderful! You might be interested in this thread from 2009 -- same kind of town spirit, but far far away & from an uncle/nephew team, rather than aunt/niece. anyportinastorm.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=canada&thread=3461&page=1#51198

Thanks for the link Bixa - enjoyed reading Imec's post and amazed by the ( different) similarities.
I really enjoyed seeing this video which highlights the excitement ,the police officers entering into the spirit of the day with the children and young people and importantly that the Paralympics is part of the whole
Has anyone else seen it in other parts of the UK?

I am just always amazed to see the school uniforms. Living in a country where the kids can wear any rags they want, I am fascinated by neat and tidy schoolchildren.

How fun! Thanks for sharing.
I enjoyed Imec's thread, too. I would never have seen it if not for this one.

Outside London, I don't think most people have taken much interest of the Olympics till now and indeed to me, as a northerner, it seemed to be very Londoncentric yet costing the rest of the country a lot of money.
The Olympc torch relay has been a great PR exercise in getting people outside London to feel involved and I have been surprised at the crowds going to see it. "Good for them" I thought.
However I was scandalised to learn that two young torch bearers at one of my grandchildren's schools were obliged to pay £700 each, for the torch and kit.......money that has come out of the sponsors charity they represent.

When I lived in Santa Barbara, CA, the Olympic torch passed through on its way to the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles. I was jogging that morning, and stumbled on the torches route. Someone had a whole armful of world flags and pushed one into my hands. I got to wave the Senegal flag as the torch passed by. Got rather swept up by it all in spite of myself.
