Need answers, please!
My neighbor, who does many favors for me, came over & asked for my wifi code. He got a laptop for his daughter & is detecting a signal close by. That would be me.
My conservatively paranoid nature screams NO! to this kind of request, thinking that somehow my internet/phone provider will find out & get even with me. However, I gave him the code.
Do I really have anything to worry about?

If the neighbor is nice and useful, I would not worry.
The only thing that you could possibly worry about would be if the daughter is a download demon and eats up all of your bandwidth.

If you have unlimited wifi service and feel you have trust in your friendship with your neighbour then I would not worry. Most people just want to play games, check a fact out or go to their Facebook page. I would think your neighbour would be respectful and thankful like the majority of people. People who are out to do bad things do not usually come over and ask, they find a way to do it without you knowing.

Thanks, guys! eats up all of your bandwidth. Kerouac, how would I be able to tell? Would my connection speed get slower? I would think your neighbour would be respectful and thankful like the majority of people. Mich, I don't think they'd knowingly abuse anything. However years ago a neighbor let me use her computer whenever she wasn't home. I didn't know she was charged by time! The deal is, he bought a laptop for his kid. The boy is little -- he's still learning to read. This is an attractive item for adults, though, so I'm wondering what kind of as yet unanticipated use it's really going to get. When my son was little he got one of those chain driven scooters for Christmas one year. It was rated for 100 pounds maximum. We were forever shooing adult friends away from using the scooter. There are six adults in that house, four of whom are in the early-30s age group. I see temptation happening.

Yes, years ago here we were also charged by time but now it is termed unlimited and we pay a set price. I do remember when I got my first computer with Internet access, I went over my limit every month. I also remember cell phones where they had carry over your minutes and that is also in the past, just a monthly charge for unlimited. I do not know what your situation is where you live.
You might have a reason to be concerned with there being 6 adults if there is a limit to your availability for your current charge and perhaps with a possibility of a huge increase in usage, your provider might get involved?

I made it clear that I don't want the access number to be given out to anyone else. After my last post above, I talked to a friend who was a software developer. She said the only thing I'd have to worry about would be someone with a high level of skill, some fancy software, & a desire to do me dirty. She pointed out that a person fitting that profile wouldn't even need the access number.
My neighbor offered to pay me for the use of the wifi. I pointed out that I didn't give him anything that I was using, plus I still have it to use if I wish, and that the pleasure of screwing Telmex (my internet provider) is payment enough.
The way we left it was that I would advise them if I have any problems because of their use of the wifi.

Mich, I don't think they'd knowingly abuse anything. However years ago a neighbor let me use her computer whenever she wasn't home. I didn't know she was charged by time! Something like this happened to me once, too... I was visiting a few friends while traveling and since I had hurt my foot, I had to stay in (I should have gone home but didn't want to give up on my journey), and thus used the internet a lot. When they mentioned it cost a lot for them, I bought a card with a code - thinking that then all the money for my usage is taken from that card. Only after a few days, they told me that the basic cost of the connection is still on their phone bill and the card just covers some kind of extra cost... I really wish they had told me right away...

I think all of us here probably went over the time limit regularly when we had a time limit -- that's why we are now on a site like this one. I still come across people from time to time (usually my age or older) who claim that they almost never turn on the computer because they have to use it at work so it is of no interest at home.

yeah i know people that say that. also people my age or only slightly older... they can't understand why i spend so much time on the computer... i guess it just varies also what interests you. some people like going to pubs or parties or clubs all the time, for example - something that tends not to interest me too much...
