Chad is obvously a name for a b-grade actor in the 1950s or early 60s. Along with Rock, Rip ...

Chad Valley is a long established toy maker from Birmingham, perhaps that is where POTUS gets the stuff he regularly throws out of his pram.

Wish I knew who made this so I could credit his/her brilliance: Another recent favorite from the day after the mid-term election was, "Last night Ted Cruz had two live mice to celebrate"

So, former Republican Michael Bloomberg has thrown his hat into the Democratic ring. He is 77, so that is the age that voters seem to like in the United States. The current president is only 73, so he probably lacks maturity.
It's nice to have so many candidates with a lot of experience in the 20th century. The 21st century will just have to learn to behave and cater to their wisdom.

On the French news tonight, it was mentioned that Bloomberg has 54 billion dollars while Donald Trump only has 3 billion dollars. Is that really what counts?
So strange for some of us. In France, paid political advertising (TV, radio, posters) is forbidden. For the first round of the election, the ceiling for expenditures is 16,850,000 euros (rallies, transportation, etc.). For the second round, it is 22,500,000 for each of the two remaining candidates.
I guess, the United States has money to burn.

I can't think of anyone who more perfectly reflects today's Democratic Party than a Republican billionaire. There is only one party, and you aren't invited.

I confess that I was wondering what the reaction would have been if Bloomberg had said he was trying for the Republican nomination instead. Who would have abandoned ship?

Whenever I try to understand the methods employed by the USA to elect its leaders my brain hurts. How can this be called an election when it is a cross between a dog-fight and a "who can buy the most votes" auction.
In the last 75 years many new countries have ventured down the path of democracy with varying results. The populations of these places desperately want to vote, will walk for 2 days to a polling booth, will risk being tortured or killed, just to gain and exercise the right that Americans throw away like rubbish.
"We, the People..." (Remember them?") will vote when they see their leaders taking the issues of the election seriously. Not attacking the opponent personally, but if there are grounds for investigation it is for a neutral body to examine. Judges are supposed to be totally impartial since Biblical times, yet here they are chosen for their politics.
The most dangerous aspect of US politics is the loss of the young people. If they are lost so is the country. Where will the future leaders come from...The Kremlin? Saudi Arabia? The environmental demonstrations show they have the capacity to organise and act, they need to be shown that their vote is essential for their democracy to survive.

Hey, Mossie...I had a Chad Valley doll. Her body and limbs were of chocolate brown velvet, her hair was knitted black 'corn-rows'and she had green and red velvet strips to make skirt, anklets and bracelets. I dearly loved my little African 'Salome'. She came on all my adventures.

Questa, I'd love a doll like your Salomé. I already have her live mini-panther.

She had a scar on her tummy where Mum sewed her up after I had done a "prayshun" on her with the nail scissors. She was also often treated with Dad's eye drops, taken orally. I have tried to find another doll like her but they stopped the manufacture just a few years ago. Probably race related (??)

Too bad. She's not a golliwog. I'd think many an African or Afrodescendant young girl would love her.

So, is it time to laugh or cry about the Iowa caucus? I don't know, but it's long since been time to change the name of this thread to "American elections can be peculiar" or something similar, since what's going on isn't even remotely funny-haha

Oh, I saw that the results for Iowa have gone up a whole 3% today. Perhaps if they outsource the counting to India, they might reach 100% by the end of the month.

She makes me gag. Everything that is negative about the moneyed class is strong in that one.
