Love the wonderful sharp angles in your picture, Htmb, and the snow-caused gentle grade in yours, Patrick. Two great photos, both enriched by subtle shadows.

Most unusual Mark! What are those steps all about?

The first two are from one place and the second two are from another. They are both Indian 'step wells' - which in a way speaks for itself. They are water deposits dug and sunk in the ground to reach the level of the ground water and used by walking down the steps to collect it. They served more purposes than just a way to get water, often social and religious and were cooler inside during the heat of the day. We generally have the British to thank for their abandonment due to the thought of the water being of poor quality. The first one is an abandoned one I came across whilst on my way to see the second one. This one is called Chand Baori - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chand_Baori

Excellent sets of stairs, but I sort of imagine a high possibility of such places also being mosquito wells.

No, I haven't been inside since 1971 even though I have made at least 50 trips to Avignon since then. That photo is from Aigues Mortes.

Seeing the Pope's Palace in Avignon once in a lifetime is plenty enough.

stairs from Alexander the Great's palace at Persepolis, Iran. To protect the original stairs another set of steps cover the original. They were shallow steps so he could ride his horse up to make a star entrance.

Those stairs in Persepolis are very user friendly. I would even dare to ride a bicycle down them.

Elephants, camels, bullocks and yaks that were given as tribute to Xerxes, and later Alexander, were driven up the stairs to be displayed. I think a bicycle could do it.

I really like the angle and composition of this picture. I'm wondering if this path is as brutal as it appears.
