Mossie, in the second picture of your garden in May, I see a plastic tube with holes and little things sticking out hanging on a tree. Is that birdseed inside?
We recently bought a house and found one of those in the garden but couldn't figure out exactly what it was for. Especially since the writing on it says "Made in USA". I thought it might be for hummingbirds but couldn't figure out how to put in liquid, not that there are hummingbirds here. Do birds actually eat the seeds you put in? Do the seeds not fall out?

I had one of those feeders and yes, they work. There is some kind of baffle in the holes to keep the seed from falling out. The design is so several birds can use it at the same time and it also foils squirrels. I'd like to know what Mossie has in his, as it looks bigger than regular seed. Mossie, are you trying to attract a particular type of bird?

My bird feeder holds peanuts which a lot of birds eat, the bits sticking out are pegs for the birds to perch on. We get a lot of pigeons which are too big and clumsy to use them, but they like peanuts. Some of the crafty pigeons will hang about nearby waiting for a smaller bird to drop a nut and then the pigeon can jump in and grab it.

While washing up today I noticed a hedgehog pushing his/her way into the hole just right of centre here. I have known hedgehogs use this spot before because they can creep under the horizontalis which grows beside the wall. I have put out some crushed peanuts and hope to entice it out, but an not counting my chickens, or hedgehogs.

That's a lovely picture, mossie. I hope you get a candid photo of the hedgehog coming out for the morning paper.

I have been putting down crushed peanuts, as recommended on a wildlife site. It has been taking them each day, carefully discarding any husks I leave on, but I haven't seen it since. My camera always lays on my kitchen table when I am here, so intend to get a quick snap if the opportunity occurs.

Fruits of the field! Are the second ones currants? Love the wildflowers.

Those are not currants, which grow in long strings.
I don't know what these things are.

Could they be elder berries, which turn black when they ripen later on.

Gardening Pro Tip: the best plants to grow are the potentially invasive species. When the bird droppings turn lilac, it's time to harvest.

This is guerilla gardening. This land next to my driveway is not mine. It belongs to the local authority but they have neglected it so I put in a bed and planted it up and left the larger area as it was but sprinkled wild flower seed last year. They hVe really come up this year and there are bees everywhere. I also planted daffodils which came up in spring but have died off now.

Good for you, Mick. It's definitely nicer than concrete.

I have to watch the contractors when they come to cut the grass that they don't strim it all down. They actually drove over it when the daffs were in flower.

It is infuriating and tragic that so many people don't even seem to register plant life. I once reprimanded a meter reader for stomping through a newly seeded bed and he responded, "Heck, ma'am, there ain't nothing there!", as he stood on the nicely turned soil in his size 14s. Maybe some see anything not planted in anal bedding rows as weeds, bu you might start a trend with your neighbors. Also, your beautiful guerrillas will be sending out volunteers here, there and everywhere. Well done, Mick!!

The other evening I went to a meeting about what interested locals would like to see done along a stretch of path just close to where I live. I confess it was also to meet people. Anyway, I had noticed that when they cut the grass, some areas were being left long. And also, they seemed to have dug out beds but there was nothing there a while ago and now it looked like weeds. It turns out that the long grass is intended to attract little bugs and the "beds of weeds" are actually wildflowers that haven't bloomed yet. There are also areas where they have planted lots of new trees. We all thought the trees were planted too close together and it turns out that the plans had been drawn up by a landscaping company and the workers just planted where the crosses were marked on the paper. Well, I guess too many trees are better than none. The whole length of this "walk" is about 400 metres and that everyone thought there should be benches, especially at several spots where there is a nice view. We also suggested garbage cans and dogshit bags. This being France, at the end when we filled out the papers with our ideas and presented them, we had little sandwiches with smoked salmon, shrimps, ham, quiche and pizza slices and cakes.
