If you wear white-soled shoes in Paris for even one week, they will be black as coal. Problem solved. Go buy them, if they're on sale.

They appear to be a good hiking and or work boot but the white soles are hideous. I've never seen the like.
I loathe Uggs.

Unfortunately, I don't think city street dirt would really turn them black. Just a dingy shade of grey.
My favourite booties are German. Forget the brand; I've had them for years. They have a bit more of a chunky heel.

My favorite boots are the ones I got right after Hurricane Katrina with a voucher issued by the Red Cross for needed items They were sitting pretty on a shelf in a thrift store, already broken in and a perfect fit. I believe they are Ralph Lauren. Not an item I would associate with his merchandise and could not possibly afford if they were new.
My husband just reconditioned them for me and near 7 years later they are in perfect condition.

Ralph Lauren has periodically revisited Western Americana with his collections, featuring denims and even calico and ruffles. Remember his Prairie collection? Maybe these boot are from one of those collections, Casi.

Maybe these boot are from one of those collections, Casi. I do, vaguely. His (or whomever creative designers in his employ) recreate apparel and all manner of design from bygone eras with what I think are oft times classic, never really trendy, and tasteful. Out of my price range/budget and even if I had the money I wouldn't spend it in such an extravagant manner. "Prairie" would surely not be a look I would be lured to. Calico, ruffles, not up my fashion alley and frankly would look downright ridiculous on me. Not even the potential for a Mardi Gras costume. Nah... That being said, I took note of your discarding some prom( from the 70's I presume") dresses and perked up as that's the type of garb I would snatch up for Carnival costuming. I believe we share the same size range and love embellishing on such. Any left? Preferably on the slinky side but, one can do wonders with poofy etc.

Casi, these prom dresses were "formals", not slinky evening wear. An ivory empire gown with high collar and sheer sleeves, trimmed in brocade bands of autumn tones around the neck and the empire waistline. (I liked that one.) A hideous chartreuse, aqua, yellow and green floral, that I can't imagine why I bought it in 1972 (must've been high!).
And a bridesmaid gown in navy velvet and baby blue chiffon. Complete with head dress and mummified bouquet.
All very small. I'm sure I couldn't zip them up now, though I haven't gained more than a few pounds since then.
You wouldn't want any of these, I'm quite sure!

Unfortunately I think that even for fancy dress, those things look better on very young women (or men!)
rikita, are the boots you'd buy still made in Germany?

actually i bought new hiking shoes today, and just googled and to my surprise at least the company (Lowa) claims to produce most of their shoes in europe, and even in germany. that actually makes me happy, as i bought them in an outdoor discounter and felt a bit bad for not spending more money out of social conscience ... i must admit though, when it comes to actually buying things, i often end up looking more at the price than at anything else ... though i plan to buy a Vaude backpack soon, because they seem to produce in a slightly more sustainable way than others ...

that's the ones i bought: Those look *very* familiar, my girlfriend wears those exact ones and *loves* them. I've bought two pair for her, they aren't cheap here but they are the only boots she really likes. I had a pair of Lowas I really liked a few years back, they were made in Italy. Nowadays, all I can find locally are Chinese-made ones. I'm currently using Keen boots made in Portland, Oregon and I really like those.

Yes, those look like very good boots. Quite a few German products seem to be still made in Europe, in nearby Central European countries, though I've seen Rohdes and Riekers, as well as the English Clarks, now made in China and nowhere near as sturdy as they used to be.

The easiest, most pain free purge ever came my way although, tragically.
Two days ago tornadoes touched down here, swacked New Orleans East and the other in the 9th Ward.
There was an appeal for clothing, linens, toiletries, linens and some other items. I went into full throttle and virtually ransacked my closets and drawers of any and everything I had not worn, didn't fit anymore etc. and boxed the items up and dropped them off at the collection spot.

For a moment there I thought the tornadoes had blown away your accumulated clutter! This is much better, though not for those unlucky 9th ward dwellers.

Did you bring them any deviled egg trays? Okay bad taste... *slinks off in shame*

Gallows humor accepted.
The only remaining deviled egg tray I owned disappeared this past Thanksgiving from our communal dinner.
Currently I am without even one. Hard to believe.

Ooo ~ good Casimira, good GOOD Casimira! Trying to find something at my mother's house, I came across some deviled egg trays & thought of you. She probably has extras, if you're feeling bereft.

I do regret not taking the Carnival glass one but I had reached a tipping point . It could have been a rare Murano hand blown one and I still wouldn't have taken it.

This doesn't really qualify as hoarding, but as I'm cleaning out my dad's house... I am cleaning the walls with Trisodium Phosphate to cut the cigarette smoke. He only smoked in one room of the house. This is not one of them.

We did that, years ago, for a close friend who was in hospital for a heart attack. And repainted his large flat. Unfortunately, though he quit smoking, he resumed the habit, and dropped dead during a road trip in front of his wife (another close friend I've mentioned here). He was only 51 or 52.

People in France (some of them at least) complained that going to neutral unmarked cigarette packs this year (like Australia already did a few years ago) would have no effect on tobacco usage. Therefore I am wondering why they were complaining. If it has no effect, they shouldn't even care.

I misundersood you, K2, I just assumed you were talking about plain (no picture) packaging. What am I going to do when I'm performing my solo show? A pack of Gitanes is absolutely required. I guess I'll need to create some artwork of my own.

Now would be a good time to undo some of the clichés. Gauloises and Gitanes were also on the list of names that must disappear.
However, it appears that banning brand names is not so easy, so it looks like the lawyers of the tobacco companies are going to win this battle.
