I have always loved the halftime shows for college football, but the displays have certainly improved since my youth. The music is just as horrible, however, but they are so concentrated on all of the other movements that it can be completely forgiven.

Certainly, everyone knows football games exist only to feature the bands at halftime! ;D

Quite remarkable . Anyone who has been drilled in the services will realise how much practise and effort that takes.

The certain amount of marching I did was quite enjoyable - in a mindless but absorbing way.

This is very American. I was once dragged to see a football game at the University of Toronto but there was never any kind of marching band or cheerleaders either.

I've only been to very few college football games but,, the highlight of every one was seeing/ hearing the bands and half time show. I think it is very much an American things as BJD says.

I think it contributes to the whole "team spirit" concept, which is particularly well developed in the United States. Clearly just about everybody seems to be accepted in these huge marching bands which generally have little musical talent -- they count on the big horns to drown out the bad notes, and even people who have never played an instrument are given a set of drums.
It's great, but it is also the reason that it would have never even crossed my mind to put this on the music branch.

That's simply not true at all Kerouac. Maybe for some of the smaller colleges but, the bigger universities, such as LSU, entry into the band is highly competitive.

Here's another amazing marching band, also out of Baton Rouge, Southern University. Many of the band members are at university on music scholarships. One of the most amazing sights and sounds to be heard is hearing one of these bands in a Mardi Gras parade and catching them as they go underneath the I-10 overpass on St. Charles Ave. It's f'n incredible to hear the echo and reverberations of them playing.!!!
To say that this doesn't belong in the music thread is insulting to the talent of these young people.

To say that this doesn't belong in the music thread is insulting to the talent of these young people. Well, we must part our aesthetic ways on this subject then. I'm so tempted to start a thread in the music section just to disprove you Kerouac. Granted, there is some real pedestrian "music" in this genre, as there is is much of the "music" posted in the music section. Many of the brass bands of NOLA and the " second line" phenomena created from it has given rise to some of the definitive music in many areas of the country. Maybe, not in France, but, most certainly throughout many parts of the US that have a very distinctive African and Caribbean influence particularly of the Carnival mode/genre. There are also some renditions of Ragtime music, a very distinctive music genre, that are classics of some of the US Southern university bands. The LSU signature piece being the Scott Joplin Tiger Rag!! If that's not music than yes, we clearly have a different not only aesthetic, but, knowledge of music in general my dear. Maybe it's legumes versus okra, I don't know, but, I'll stand my ground on this! De gustibus non est disputandum....

Stirring stuff. I hadn't known you had infiltrated London ;D Mark, I had seen Arabic pipes but you picked out some good ones. Incidentally, I once took part in a fancy parade where we had to march to a Scottish pipe band at full volume. An experience I never want to repeat

For many kids, marching band is more than just playing a musical instrument. It's an anchor to normalcy. It's a support group. A lifeline. Some young people excel as musicians, while others may not; but in the marching bands I've been associated with for close to fifty years I can tell you that the successful performers - talented or not - work long, hard hours to perform as a cohesive group. For many young people band is more than just formations executed on a field, more than the sound made by a well-played horn. It's a lesson in how to live a positive and healthy life, in how to work with others, and it's often an extended family.
This clip speaks for itself. This one's for casimira.

Inspirational. Again I recall from my service experience that squad drill, when it was performed properly, drew the squad together and gave a sense of shared achievement. This can only give hope and pride to these youngsters, which is what is needed to keep them on the straight and narrow.

Thank you htmb, that brought tears to my eyes,I am very moved. And your words in your post are so poignant.I get goose bumps every time I go to one of the parades and hear these kids play. How this cannot be described as music in one of it's purest, taking it to the streets form really, really offends me. For some it's all they've got. And ye,t they get out and are willing to share it with the world.
P.S. I know the O. Perry Walker band and they are fabulous!!

Casimira.... I do have to say I think the appreciation of different types of music is just like any other art. It's all a matter of personal taste. For instance, I don't particularly like opera and would not care to sit through most productions. But I can appreciate talented opera singers, and admire them for their hard work and dedication to their craft.

I shared the O. Perry Walker trailer with my husband HTMB, and, when it was over he had tears rolling down his cheeks. He's NOLA born and bred so for him it was super meaningful and special. Thank you. I need to scope out getting that movie!!! Yes, as I posted earlier de gustibus non est disputandum dear, "in matters of taste there is no dispute or there's no accounting for taste....
