I just went to have a look on TT and the mods let through a post on W Europe by sfgirl talking about the way the site is running, not allowing links to websites in other languages for travel info.
In particular, she complained about Ansh not being allowed to post because of his age and what a valuable contributor he was.
And they allowed it!!

At the moment I deliberately join and limit mysekf to the small talk because I don't like to formulate elaborate advice and then being blocked due to .... yes, due to whatever reason. So at the moment I love the snow thread. -sfgirl just wrote an interesting thread, called rules on the WE branch. And ansh is still alive there!!!

a post of mine at TT just went through without delay...
that's an interesting link you've posted in #199, bixaorellana.
to some extent, it looks like competition to LP - yet imo more threatening towards their guidebooks than to their board. in the first place -like so many things at wiki- it's backbreakingly extensive yet sometimes very superficial at the same time. you can try to cater for everything, but you'll always have to cut something out, there's (currently) little on special interests. on the other hand, I like that they plan to cover more ground, unlike LP that often leaves huge withe spots.
at TT, from my observation, there are mainly three groups*: the itinerarists, the clueless and the highly specific. I guess the clueless could gain from wikivoyage, yet since they're seemingly often inept to retrieve information from google (or prefer to get an answer from a real person), they might stay. the other two groups will gain little, hopefully they'll stick to boards. I admit that I can envisage myself checking that page on occasion or even linking to it on TT (if permitted ;-) ).
*apart from the regulars, that is
p.s. welcome regards, the more the merrier!

Guten Abend, Regards. Nice to see here!
Anyways, they have allowed sfgirl's post for now- what will the next shift think?
Aribo has posted a bit since TT's re-arrival. I think. But due to the (lack of) search function, I cannot check now.
Cheers.

As to aribo I assume he's showing his newly born daughter in a Far East cherry garden at the very moment. As for me I'm happy to communicate through internet because wind and snow are sneaky cooperating to lock me from the real world. (eastern Netherlands). Try to send a photo of surrounding iglos.

Good morning & regards to you, Regards. (it's still morning where I am) Hope the workings of this forum will unfold themselves to you easily.
Gad, I had to put on a sweater when I saw your picture, Arizona. Chill-inducing, but an excellent shot.
I love your capsule characterization of the users (apart from the regulars) on TT, Nautiker. Wikivoyage will get a great deal of traffic simply because it's probably going to show up high on any hits list from Google. However, and maybe I just haven't had enough coffee today, a trip to "Travellers Pub" made me think it would be too much work there & that too many sweepers may spoil the site. If nothing else, their clunky attempts to avoid using any TT phraseology (Getting There) are amusing (Get In).

So--here's where all the rats have deserted to (I mean that in the nicest metaphorical sense possible, and I hereby join you--eek eek!).
But no worries, the TTTF ship isn't sinking. I'm sure the captain just stopped to pick up some ice...
The first new rule of TTTF seems to be: don't discuss TTTF. Even the "Welcome Back!" thread is locked. How very, um... welcoming.
Welcome back? How ironic. We didn't go anywhere, the dang forum did! It's we who should welcome the forum back! Given the current dispensations, maybe "welcome" is too strong a word... I'm guessing it will be a case of mis-management and lack of communication that will end up in the textbooks. Everyone's ID over there should be replaced with "Content Provider" followed by a very long number. Because that's certainly the environment that's been created. And yet old habits die hard.
Speaking of welcomes: I hereby move that the minimum age to post on this forum be raised to 16. Hi Ansh! Just kidding. We haven't always seen eye to eye, but you've certainly done some growing up.
Some of you may know me by a different name or two.
Oh, and thanks for the link, Arizona. Wonder how that slipped through the new, improved, bunchy-knickered moderation...

Hello, Evil! I made a new TT discovery today and perhaps the most ridiculous one yet. I was replying to a thread and I referred to the two posts above me along the lines of "X at #16 is totally correct and Y at #17 forgot to add this only works off season" -- you get the picture. Even though the moderation delay was removed from the Western Europe branch, this post never appeared -- they apparently have a filter now that prevents you from mentioning the name of any other poster! Jeez, what a bunch of turd brains!

Greetings, oh Evil one, even though I know you not. Incidentally, the minimum age here is 13, so be sure to treat Ansh like the old guy he is. I'll try to post a picture of today's view out of my home this morning (i am not good at this)

There is no other way than to go through a photo hosting website? Which one is the best? Okay, Artemis ~~ help is at hand to ease you and anyone else new here into the picture-posting process. You'll need to use Reply as opposed to Quick Reply, but once there you'll see an easy-to-use option for hosting pictures. Even so, I strongly urge everyone to create personal accounts not only for ease of use, but to safeguard your pictures. If you already have an account with any of the sites on the hosting feature, you'll be able to save your pictures to that account. If you have a facebook account, you can grab the urls from any photos you have on it by following the directions from #4, 5, or 6 here: anyportinastorm.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=fotobasics&thread=4298&page=1#105610

Hello to all and how nice to see so many familiar names! On Anyport I am Gabriele, on TT I am SFgirl......I hadn't been following this thread (I had posted early on) but then on TT Refuge I found out about Ansh being banned (Age discrimination!), well that irked me no end so I went back and read all the rules and since they had let me post about losing all my posting credits I decided to test them a little further...and they accepted it!
I do wonder if I have raised issues which the mods are not qualified to answer and they're waiting until someone higher up make a decision. I read the UK papers and I think alot of the BBC response on this is a kneejerk reaction to the criticism they continue to get for their handling of one of their famous personalities, Jimmy Savile. Google his name and BBC and you'll see what I'm taking about. I think they're going overboard, which is why I'm willing to confront them. I also think they are trying very hard to avoid getting any more attention to what they're doing on TT....and may be afraid that my next reaction might be to take my concerns to another forum...a more public one. They don't know who we are and for all they know, I could be a working reporter or influential blogger. I have considered contacting the Travel Editor at the Independent as I have corresponded with him before (about his hiking in the Pyrenees) because what is going on at TT really IS travel news. BBC is an extension of the government and what they do should be open and apparent but of course that never happens. For those who don't use the TT Refuge, I've been copying my TT posts (the seditious ones) there so there is a record of them should TTP (thorntree proper, although the letters could stand for something else should one wish..) delete them. My attitude to TT is: WE are a community, you are just a bunch of bureaucrats. (I do prefer the French word, 'functionaires'...somehow it's more patronising...telling someone they're there 'to function'. K2, bjd, I seem to remember the work is somewhat insulting..is it? If so, I'll have to use it more often.

I have been following this thread and just wanted to welcome all new members to this community. There are wonderful people here who post outstanding photo essays, pictures, share opinions and advise/introduce us all to different regions/cultures from all over the world and I understand many of you provide the same quality of knowledge/assistance on Thorn Tree. I hope that Thorn Tree resolves their issues as I can see they have a dedicated fellowship and I know if this Forum was disrupted I would be seriously disappointed. Welcome, and I look forward to your posts here on APIAS. Cheers, Mich

Oh, you Canadian-French females are too clever for me, bjd... And thanks for the welcomes K2 and bix.
Well, just had a slightly snarky reply instantly posted on TT WE (of course) It's a very recent thread, if you wanna look. "Rhodes or Crete?"
Should we maybe try to figure out if there's a pattern to the Free Posting Hours? Perhaps we should also begin correlating local wind direction?
Thanks gab/sf for helping to try to push the boundaries. They do seem rather elastic. Or downright arbitrary.
But it all boils down to a subtle, pseudo-diplomatic "if you're a current regular, please go away."

Eviltwin -- you sense of humour is instantly identifiable.
Gabriele/sfgirl -- glad to know it's you. About the word "fonctionnaire" -- it indeed means a civil servant (although, as George Orwell said, they are neither civil nor servants). In itself it is not pejorative. Any government job, whether as a nuclear scientist or a post office worker works for the fonction publique.. However, when you are trying to get some information or are up against an ignorant idiot working there, you can say, "C'est un vrai fonctionnaire!" and that is pejorative.

Er - no, it isn't.
I don't disagree with the general sentiment, but in this case, this is one of their commercial ventures rather than part of the BBC's public service remit. Quite why they ever took over Lonely Planet was indeed never clear, though presumably they saw some sort of potentially profitable tie-up with their commercial spin-offs. Their own website messageboards were dramatically hacked back a while ago, primarily as a cost-saving measure, and also because a lot of the content wasn't particularly relevant or focussed on anything the BBC was or wasn't doing.
Though I don't doubt BBC top management will have got highly agitated at the potential for yet more PR problems from the Daily Mail and the like in the aftermath of the Savile business, it may well that the LP management is likewise trying, however clumsily, to re-focus its messageboards to whatever they think their business priorities are. In the end, as with any commercial company's messageboard, it's theirs rather than the posters'.

I approve of them trying to get the TT more travel focused again. After all, out of the multiple refugee boards that sprang up after the massacre 4 years ago, this is the one where we try (and often fail, I admit) to keep as travel focused as possible -- or at least to have photo reports from around the world and a discussion of global events, even if this place will probably never be a first choice for more specific travel information ("Where do I buy a ticket for...." "Is there a good hotel in the Bahnhofstrasse...."). People who were only interested in YC/WT took a look here and mercifully went elsewhere. I have a soft spot for SiT and CV also, but those branches were already dying off on the TT. Not to mention some of the branches that never took off (Sore Thumb...).
Anyway, my approval of them trying to get back to travel at the TT, stops at the methods they have used to make it totally antiseptic and smooth. One of the strengths of the Lonely Planet guidebooks way back when was that they were a bit cheeky and insolent in their tone. Now it all feels like THX-1138 over there.

I tend to not get attached to forums too much. There are some I like better than others. Some I joined and then left, sometimes just out of sheer boredom. Nowadays I only post on a couple, 2 or 3, my real life seems to have pretty much taken over any time I used to devote to the internet and forums. And I can see myself disappearing from them altogether some time in the future, as my real life keeps on getting busier. (I will always find time to pop into Anyport though ) I always wondered how come Thorn tree could turn such a blind eye to what YC/WT were. I felt it really bought down the whole tone and purpose of the site, and I also wondered what genuine people who came to Thorn tree for travel advice must have thought. At times I actually felt embarrassed for the BBC. I'm not surprised that they did this overall, it was a long time coming.
