nycgirl, I am thoroughly enjoying your photos and am envious that I have not been to Robben Island yet! I think there was trouble with the engine of the boat going out there the last time I visited cape Town. I'm not sure what you were referring to in your photo of the cormorants "sunning themselves on the islands sculptured limestone blocks" I can see rocks inside the protective surround of DOLOSSE. The anchor-like cement blocks are a unique invention. To let you read all about how they came about I am giving this link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DolosI am anxious to read more and am looking forward to you Kruger experiences. More soon please!

Thanks for the interesting link about the dolosse. I didn't hear anything at all about them and assumed they came from the limestone quarry. I also assumed that their purpose was purely aesthetic, I didn't realize they served an important function. On the ferry they showed a short film about the island that may or may not have mentioned it, but I was on the deck the whole time trying not to throw up. I think you would really enjoy the tour, Tod, even though you already know the history quite well. However, I would have liked a bit more opportunities to walk around and take it all in. We were told we could take a few minutes to stroll around and look at the penguins, seals, etc. at the end, but the prison tour ran a bit too long, so we were herded back to the ferry immediately. Also, looking at other reports online, it seems that in the past visitors were allowed to leave the bus and stand in the quarry where the prisoners labored, but this did not happen on my visit. I wonder why not. Time constraints, or visitors being disruptive? At any rate, I think that would have been a good spot to get out and contemplate what happened on that very spot and I'm sorry that it's no longer an option. But, as I said, excellent tour overall.

There's other parts of South Africa I'd like to see, like the Garden Route. But then again, there's so much in Cape Town I didn't get to do, plus I wouldn't mind returning to my favorites.

I'm starting an album to keep track of birds we've seen and was wondering if anyone recognizes this guy: I've got a few more pics if these aren't enough
