I did not know tha nycgirl, what a shame it is closed, presumably Winter ? It must look completely different when the trees are leaf less and you can see down into the park grounds. i took that photo end of September on a really beautiful day.
My pic of the Kyrenia Mts was taken in May 1952, so definitely predates yours Lugg A few days later we were informed that next day , we would be taking part in Exercise "Short Stroll", which was an escape and evasion exercise. The scenario for those was that we would be dropped off in pairs at night, from the back of a closed lorry so we could not see where we were, to simulate us coming down in hostile territory. We would be advised of a "safe house" which we had to make for and we were restricted to a a 1:500,000 map, a water bottle, a pack of raisins and enough cash for a strictly emergency only phone call. For this we were told that we had about 48 hours in which we had to cover about 40 miles and find a prominent white house on the East coast. We did not know where we were to be dropped, we had to sort ourselves out from the map and get on with it. Incidentally we would also be hunted down by the army and the civilian population was warned to report any suspicious characters. We were dropped on this Nicosia to Kyrenia road about 10 pm and set off, trying to keep clear of civilisation. Eventually we were spotted by the army and chased into the foothills of the mountains. My pilot and I gave them the slip and continued until we were the last pair to be captured when we were in sight of our destination about 40 hours later. By then we were reduced to walking for about 20 minutes and sitting down for about 20. We were relieved of our boots and belts and taken to Trikomo, a town on the coast, and slung in a police cell Here we had to strip to our underpants and were handcuffed. After some hours we were taken back to our base at Nicosia for interrogation. There were about 6 of us and the journey was made in the back of an open truck with us, still only in underpants , handcuffed to one another. We were told that we would get similar treatment from the Russians. there is much more to this, but all great fun AFTERWARDS ;D ;D
