Thanks Casimira but I don't think I outwitted anyone. Everyone asked all of the right questions and I just showed up at the right time. ;D Since you think there aren't any rules, I will go ahead and post mine. (Neither of these particular specimen's is owned by me, so I will give proper photo credit after they are identified.)

Cristina, there's no rules, just post away, I've no problem with that.

Is the first one hollow?
And I don't know if it's just me but the second one looks a bit like a sex toy.

Are they baby rattles?

I would guess baby rattles too. Are these pics to scale or magnified? The first one does resemble a hollowed out gourd that's been lacquered.

Sorry, they are not to scale. The first one is about 5.5" (14.5cm) long. The second is about 4.5"(11.5cm) long (which might not make for a very satisfying sex toy. ) Not a baby rattle either. I'm not sure if the larger one is hollow or not, since it is not in my possession. They can be either hollow or solid, depending on the material used. As this one is a fancier version, it is probably solid. They are both used for related (but not identical) tasks.

Ceremonial or used in some ritual? That first one is so beautifully wrought, that silver handle.

Are they for darning?

We have a winnah! They are called darning eggs, or at least the first one is, due to the egg shape. The first one would have been used for darning socks. You would pull the sock over the "egg" to keep the sock taut and maintain some resistance (as well as keep something between the needle and the other side of the sock) as you mended the sock. The second one is for darning gloves. The ends are shaped differently to accommodate the thumb vs the finger of the glove. There is a huge variety in artisanship (I just made that word up, I think) when you look at antique darning eggs. I found these two specimens at Needlewitch. I love the first one on the page, although at $425 AUD its a bit out of my league.

I'm going to put up an object that I am positive many of you will recognize. Still, if you don't give it away, it will be something for others to guess about while we wait for someone to post something more mysterious than this.

No -- something does spin, but it's not the round end. And it's not a spindle. Let me know if you all want hints.

Okay. Since I saw you post about this elsewhere, I am assuming it's a piece of office equipment, whether one for a human office though, I cannot say.
