Huis Clos - in a legal context, usually translated as in camera. My beef about the "Big Brother" type of so-called reality TV programme is that even a prize windbag like Sartre only needed three characters and an hour or so to tell us - in this play - that "Hell is other people".

My beef about the "Big Brother" type of so-called reality TV programme is that even a prize windbag like Sartre only needed three characters and an hour or so to tell us - in this play - that "Hell is other people". NO REMOTE by L. Ola The entire play takes place in a drawing room, Second Empire style, with a massive flat screen TV on the wall. The audience can not see the screen. What sounds like an unsually strident reality show blares from the TV. GARCIN enters, with VALET, and looks at the TV: So this is what there is to watch? VALET: Yes. GARCIN: A reality show, I observe. Well, I suppose one gets used to it in time. VALET: Some do, some don't. GARCIN: Are all the shows like this one? VALET: How could they be? We cater to all types: Aged rock star fans, fans of vulgar materialism, people who like to watch other people argue loudly.... GARCIN: But I can't watch this type of thing continually. Where's the remote control? VALET: You must have your little joke, sir! GARCIN: But I'm not joking. VALET: So you haven't gotten over your -- how do you call it?-- your sense of human dignity? Excuse my smiling. (to be continued.)
