I'm feeling very sorry for myself today. A bout of painful sciatica started yesterday and by last night I couldn't get a comfortable sleeping position - so no shut-eye! The pain started as a sore hip in the morning and by bedtime I was in agony. I swigged numerous painkillers and even woke my mother in the early hours to get something stronger from her stash. At the moment I am doped to the eyeballs and although feel the dull throb in my back and front thigh, I can have a quick peek at Anyport as the pharmacy has sent me some drugs that should help. What a way to end the Easter weekend

That sounds pretty awful. I have been lucky enough to escape just about all such pains so far in my life. I think I missed perhaps 2 days of work due to a backache during my entire career while certain colleagues had work stoppages of up to two weeks sometimes, although more often it was two or three days but several times a year. Office work is very bad for one's health!

Take care, tod. I'm so sorry you are in pain. Ice always helps me, and deep tissue massage was a major factor in finally clearing up the sciata on my left side. I hope you find the right combination for relief.

Oh Tod, I am sorry to read that you are in pain. I hope that you receive a medication that helps to alleviate it quickly.
My husband suffered for years with what was thought to be sciatica. When it became unbearable his doctor sent him to a specialist who did a CT scan and then an MRI and found that he had two bulging disks in his lower spine. He was sent to a Neurosurgeon who operated with the intention of shaving the disks to take stress off the nerve. As it resulted there was also cartilage that had broken off and was in his spinal canal and that was what was irritating the nerve. As soon as he woke from the surgery he felt the relief.

sorry... that sounds very bad... i never had any problems with the sciatic nerve until recently, but in the last months it occasionally acts up - not very strongly in my case, fortunately, but i can imagine a bit what your pain feels like. i hope the pharmacy is sending something that helps...

I get sciatica, or lumbago, as my father called it. I think it stems from when I was about 10. I fell out of a tree and landed flat on my back. The fall knocked all the wind out of me and I lay there unable to move. I thought that perhaps I had died , and that would be how it was. But after a few seconds I was able to move and had knocked my back on a tree root. Anyway I soon recovered and thought no more about it until very many years later when I had bad backs. The hospital fixed me up with a corset , which placed a steel strap each side of my spine. It was explained to me that I had a "slipped disc" and later that I had a "displaced vertebra" . A later hospital doctor said "throw that b corset away" and got the physio to give me exercises to strengthen my back. At last that gave me relief, and whenever the problem recurs I have to get down to the exercise for a week or two, which sorts me out.

Golly Mossie, I think you had a close shave there! My problem is probably related to age and arthritis. Also thinning of my bones although the bone scan said I was in no immediate danger. Must run in the family as my mother has a 'Dowager's back' or a hump as it it also known. It started when I was around 38. We took a six week trip to the USA and South America. I remember on the plane coming back that my one leg had started tingling and felt numb to the touch down the one side. I had no pain whatsoever. Thought no more of it until I had a sore backside some years ago. I had a course of Neurobin injections (which I have once a month now to pep me up) so better go along an get a few more. This time the pain is unbearable at times. I am doped to the eyeballs again today

A good friend of ours has had sciatica. Ice and physio therapy over a period of time gave her great relief. I also think she sought some relief from acupuncture. Pain pills over a long period of time may not be good for you and you may risk further injury while taking them. Please be careful. I hope you find some relief Tod.

Are massages good for sciatica?
I thought about Tod in a shopping mall in Biloxi the other day, where those entrepreneurial Vietnamese have set up a new enterprise in the central lane -- massages. $15 for 10 minutes and higher fees for more minutes (but digressive of course). There were people grunting and groaning (in ecstasy) for all to see as the nimble but merciless fingers worked them over for all to see.

Therapeutic massage is what helped me the most when I had sciatica down my left leg.

I'm getting more worried about my right hip pain. It's been gone for about 10 days and came back today with a vengeance. Is this how a hip replacement starts Mossie?? I know what sciatica feels like and this is similar but not painful when I am walking which is usually the case with sciatica. It's just a numb pain constantly. I have been sitting at my computer a lot today as my car went in for it's first service.

You may have a case of piriformis syndrome or an inflamation of any of the ligaments in your sacro-ileac area. I have such a hard time with pain in this area, and it's not from nerves, but ligament pain. If you go to the physio, they will be able to isolate exactly what is. One well placed poke in the right place, you'll jump off the table, and voilá, you're diagnosed.

Tod, maybe it's time to have it checked out by a medical professional. Sounds like your pain could be caused by one of many different things. Keep us posted. Do anti-inflammatories help?

My hip pain was referred pain and occurred just above the knee, when the doctor first suggested my hip I didn't believe him. Luckily he sent me for an X-ray and there was no doubt about it then.

Lizzy - Yes, I am back on anti-inflams left over from our trip last year. Taking Arcoxia 90mg. My knees hurt as well but not all the time. I am definitely making an appointment this week for all the necessary tests and Xrays.
