Franchimont. Close to liege. A castle was built there around the years 1000. Still visitable. And now I remember why I know this small place. A small battle included the 600 franchimontois who tried to oppise Charles le téméraire. We learn that at school.

Afghanistan. A country that is of little value and that Alexander the Great the Brits the Russians and now the US have never been able to control. But why did they all try ? Proximity. It sits astride trade routes and can serve as a base for anyone who wants to stir up trouble in any of the neighbouring or connected countries: so is of interest to both actual and wouldbe regional hegemons. Hence Britain Vs Russia in the 19th century, various Shahs of Persia in times past, Soviet Russia and the US more recently, and India Vs Pakistan for good measure. But not (so far) China. Back to the game: Stalybridge. Town on the edges of Manchester: produced the country's first woman magistrate.
