Hibiscus Town -- a town in Hunan province, China that for 2000 years -- until 1997 -- was known as Wang Village. Its name was changed to acknowledge the sensation created by a movie called "Hibiscus Town" that was shot in the town in 1986.

I think many early place names in the US and Canada were in honor of whoever funded the expedition.
Grand Teton -- rude but official name for a national park, a peak, and a mountain range in the US
